James Cameron Becomes The Only Director To Helm Three $2 Billion Movies

“Titanic” director James Cameron just ticked another iconic box as he has become the only director in history with three films topping $2 billion at the box office. Cameron is the brain behind some very successful movies such as the first “Avatar” movie, “Titanic,” “The Terminator,” franchise, “Alita: Battle Angel” and others.

Before releasing “Avatar: The Way of the Water,” Cameron revealed that he already has a sequel lined up for a fifth film to be released in the coming years. This, however, is provided that the second and third films are as successful as the original “Avatar”, which was released in cinemas in December 2009.

Cameron just became the first director to pass the milestone. This weekend, the success of his “Avatar: The Way of Water” made the filmmaker the only director with three films topping the $2 billion mark. The film achieved this on Sunday at the international box office, just six weeks after its release.

“Avatar: The Way of Water” collected $2.024 billion against a budget of $350 million to $460 million. Cameron’s other two films, which have crossed the $2 billion mark, include the first, “Avatar” (2009), which has grossed $2.9 billion against a $237 million budget.

The second was 1997’s “Titanic,” which grossed $2.1 billion against a $200 million budget. Aside from Cameron’s three successful films, only three other titles have surpassed the $2 billion mark, and all of them belong to Disney.

Cameron’s 2009 “Avatar” is the highest-grossing film of all time, with Marvel’s “Avengers: Endgame” (2019) coming in second. The film grossed $2.798 billion on a budget of $356 million to $400 million. Third in line was “Titanic” with $2.1 billion, after which “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” (2015) appeared on the list with $2.071 billion. The latter was done on a budget of $306 million.

Marvel’s “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018) was up next and earned $2.052 billion on a budget of $325 million to $400 million. “Avatar: The Way of the Water” hit $2.024 billion making it the sixth highest grossing film of all time.

The first “Avatar” movie took 47 days after its December 2009 release to reach and surpass the $2 billion mark. By comparison, “Avatar: The Way of Water” only used 37 days to do so. “Avengers: Endgame” is currently the fastest to reach $2 billion, doing so in 11 days, while “Titanic” is the longest at 5,233 days.

The overwhelming success of “Avatar: The Way of Water” means fans can expect more from the “Titanic” cast. Earlier, Cameron revealed that he plans to release three more “Avatar” movies in 2024, 2026, and 2028.
