James Cameron Speaks On Eerie Similarity Between The Titan Submersible & Titanic Sinking

James Cameron, the director of “Titanic,” finally spoke about the OceanGate disaster. Cameron noted the “uncanny parallels” between the actual Titanic tragedy and the OceanGate situation.

The Titan submarine first disappeared on June 18 while diving for the remains of the Titanic. The US Coast Guard launched a massive search and rescue operation, but the explosion was unfortunately confirmed. OceanGate itself has confirmed that all five passengers in the submarine are presumed dead.

James Cameron, the legendary director behind the 1997 film “Titanic,” finally addressed the tragedy of the OceanGate sinking. The sunken ship is a five-passenger ship that is believed to have exploded underwater while on a tourist tour to see the wreckage of the Titanic.

Cameron spoke to ABC News about the tragedy and noted how similar it was to the real Titanic. He said, “I was struck by the parallels of the Titanic disaster itself, where the captain had been repeatedly warned of ice ahead of his ship, yet he steamed full speed into an ice field on a moonless night—and many died. As a result.”

The “Avatar” director also mentioned that there is concern among the deep sea exploration community about submarines. He added, “For an almost identical tragedy, where warnings were ignored, to happen at the same site as all the dives that happen around the world, I think it’s just shocking. It’s really quite surreal.”

During Cameron’s interview with ABC News, the director is deeply disturbed by the presumed death of his friend, the French explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet. He said, “It’s a very small community. For him to die tragically in this way is almost impossible for me to process.”

The shipwreck first disappeared on June 18 while visiting the famous wreck, which sank in 1912. In addition to Nargeolet, other passengers included Stockton Rush, OceanGate’s own CEO; Hamish Harding, a British billionaire; Shahzada Dawood, a Pakistani businessman and his son, Suleman Dawood.

After the submarine disappeared from radar, the US Coast Guard began a large-scale search and rescue mission for the vessel. However, on June 22, it was confirmed that debris from the sinking had been found and was “consistent with a catastrophic loss of pressure chamber.”

District commander Rear Admiral John Mauger of the First Coast Guard held a press conference on the tragedy. He said, “It’s a very unforgiving environment down there on the seabed. The debris is consistent with a large explosion of the ship.”

OceanGate itself also released a statement earlier, saying that all passengers were “sadly lost.” They called the men on board “true explorers who share a different spirit of adventure” and wrote that they all shared “a deep passion for exploring and protecting the world’s oceans.”

The company continued its statement by sharing its condolences to the deceased passengers and their families. It read in part, “Our hearts go out to these five souls and each of their families at this tragic time. We mourn the loss of their lives and the joy they brought to everyone they knew.”

Investigation into the wreckage is still ongoing

The Coast Guard has stated that it is too early for them to determine what time the explosion occurred. They have been placing sonar buoys in the area for the past few days but have yet to notice any incidents in the water at that time.

Investigating officers insist that they will continue to investigate the debris they have found, which will help the families of the passengers process the tragedy.

Before the wreckage of the submarine was found on the seabed, the Coast Guard estimated the passengers still had 96 hours of oxygen. This supply was reported to have run out in the early morning of June 22. The tragedy quickly went viral on social media, with many monitoring the countdown and commenting on the sad incident.
