Career

He was recruited into the AFL by Essendon from the 1990 AFL Draft; however, due to a significant hip injury and other ailments in his junior football career, he was not taken until pick number 79, Essendon’s eighth pick and one of the last picks of the draft. Hird missed much of his debut season with the club in 1991 through injury. At the end of the season, a vote was taken to determine if he should be delisted. The majority (4-2) decided to delist Hird, but coach Kevin Sheedy, seeing a bright future for the young Hird, chose to keep him. Hird ended up staying with the club.

A late replacement for former captain Terry Daniher, he made his senior debut against St Kilda at Waverley Park in 1992. Hird played most of the season with Essendon Reserves, who won the championship that year under Denis Pagan.
