“Fifty Shades of Grey” star Jamie Dornan was hospitalized after dealing with bed bugs while on vacation.

Journalist Gordon Smart recalls a shocking incident in “The Good, the Bad, and the Unexpected” involving him and the actor while they were in Portugal.

After a night of golf, wine and espresso martinis, the two developed alarming symptoms that were later attributed to toxic maggots.

During a conversation on BBC Scotland’s panel show, “The Good, the Bad, and the Unexpected,” Gordon shared details about how an unforgettable vacation in Portugal with Dornan took an unexpected turn.

Looking back on the experience, Smart noted that he started to feel weird after the “great” first day. “We had a great time the first day, played a lot of golf, went out, a lot of wine, and then we had espresso martinis,” he said.

Smart continued: “Anyway, the next day, we were playing golf, we were all absolutely horrible and I started feeling tingling in my left hand and then tingling in my left arm. I was the son of a GP and thought, ‘This is usually the start of a heart attack.’”

“Now, I’m a pretty healthy guy, but when you start thinking you’re having a heart attack, you’re sure you’re convincing yourself you’re having a heart attack,” he added, according to Daily Mail.

Worried about his health, the former journalist sought medical attention at a local medical center, where he discovered he had a high heart rate. He took an Uber to the hospital but collapsed and woke up in a hospital bed attached to a machine.

When examined by a doctor and questioned about what he drank the day before, Smart said: “As a Scottish man in Portugal, when you start saying, ‘Well, I think there were nine bottles of white wine, I had six espresso martinis,’ and I could see him shaking his head in disgust at the Scottish specimen before him.

However, when Smart returned to the hotel from the hospital, he found Dornan hooked up to medical equipment.

He recalled: “Jamie said, ‘My dear. Gordon, about 20 minutes after you left, my left arm went numb, my left leg went numb, my right leg went numb, and I found myself in the back of the ambulance.'”

A week later, a doctor suggested their symptoms might be linked to the toxic hairy marching caterpillars rampant on the golf courses of Southern Portugal.

“And it turns out there are maggots on a golf course in southern Portugal that have killed people’s dogs and given men in their 40s heart attacks,” added Smart. “We were up against a hairy marching caterpillar and were very lucky to get out of it alive.”
