On August 3, Variety spoke with the “Everything, Everywhere, All At Once” cast at the Project Angel Food groundbreaking for The Chuck Lorre Family Foundation Campus in Los Angeles. The 64-year-old actor said that he “doesn’t know” when the strike will end but remains “hopeful” that AMPTP (The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers) and the actors’ union will be able to find common ground.

“I hope we can all see all sides. I’m more Swiss. I’m not a polarizing person here. I don’t like the rhetoric of both parties,” he said. “Any solution means nobody is happy. So there will be a solution and not everyone will be happy.”

“I don’t like them vs us. The fact that there are them and we bother me,” he continued. “It is an industry and I hope that all parties can recognize the unity of our industry, and that we are interdependent, and AI is not interdependent, that humans are and ultimately interdependent on each other will win.”

At the same event, the “Freaky Friday” actor also spoke Reuters and said, “I wish I could be Switzerland in all this,” maintaining his neutrality. “The issues are real, and my hope is that nobody will be happy with the solution, but we will get back to work,” he said. “That’s the nature of a settlement — neither side is happy.”

He went on to say, “We all have to give up something to get something, and I hope that what we can do, in the end, is continue our work.” Many fans were not happy with his statement and immediately took to his actions online. Over the weekend, the “Knives Out” actor took to Instagram to “clear up any confusion” in an Instagram post explaining his stance on the SAG-AFTRA strike.

The Oscar-winning actor later took to Instagram to clear up the confusion over his earlier comments. “On Thursday I attended a wonderful charity event celebrating the groundbreaking for @projectangelfood’s new campus and I couldn’t help but be asked about the strike and I made a comment about wanting to be like Switzerland,” she wrote in the caption. “Suddenly the news cycle machine was clearly desperate to get around me to explain the comment.”

“HERE THEY ARE! I FULLY SUPPORT the @sagaftra strike, have volunteered to make signs several times and have donated to the relief fund. I SUPPORT the leadership and SUPPORT our demands. I am a rank and file union member,” he continued. “I am not in any negotiating committee. I believe we need to look at all parties in any conflict to find solutions, solutions and just and equitable solutions. Can we end this now and not turn this into a ridiculous news cycle story AND GET BACK TO THE TABLE AND NEGOTIATE ?”

It should be noted that the “True Lies” actress has been vocal in her support of the SAG-AFTRA strike on her Instagram page. In an Instagram post she shared on Saturday morning, she shared a sign from the picket line that said, “Today’s secret word is… STRIKE.”

In the caption, the “Anything But Love” Golden Globe winner wrote, “WHAT WE WANT? A FAIR CONTRACT! WHEN WE WANT IT? NOW!” He also tagged @sagaftra, @sagaftrafound and @wgawest at the end of his caption.
