Jan. 6 Capitol riot ‘QAnon Shaman’ files for 2024 congressional bid

Arizona resident Jacob Chansley, the January 6, 2021 rioter nicknamed the “QAnon Shaman” whose image went viral on television as he wore face paint with animal fur and horns, plans to run for Congress in 2024.

The 35-year-old filed a statement of interest last Thursday, which the Associated Press reported, indicating Chansley wants to run as a Libertarian in next year’s election for Arizona’s 8th Congressional District seat.

Rep. Debbie Lesko, R-Ariz., announced in October that she would not seek re-election for her seat, which the 64-year-old first ran for in 2018.

His term will officially end in January 2025.

Chansley, 35, is widely known as the shirtless man with face paint who, according to a federal judge, became the “image” of the January 6 riots at the US Capitol.

Many photos and videos from the riots show Chansley carrying an American flag through the Capitol building as a group of supporters of then-President Trump engaged in violent confrontations with police outside.

After the riot, Chansley was arrested and charged in connection with the riot.

He pleaded guilty to civil disorder and violent entry into the Capitol in September 2021.

Chansley was sentenced to 41 months in prison in November 2021, and after serving about 27 months, was transferred to a Phoenix halfway house in March 2023.

In a lengthy speech at his sentencing hearing, Chansley said he was “wrong to enter the Capitol” and did not condone his actions.

“I am in no way, make up or form a violent criminal… not even a domestic terrorist,” Chansley said. “I am a good person who breaks the law. … I truly repent for my actions.”

Chansley previously called himself a “QAnon Shaman,” but has since denied the QAnon movement.
