Janani Iyer was born on 31 March 1987 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. She is also called by the name ‘Janu’. She attended D.A.V. Boys Senior Secondary School, Gopalapuram, Chennai and did her Engineering in Computer Science from Saveetha Engineering College, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. She wanted to become an actress since the age of 4. Following her passion, she started giving auditions in order to become a successful model and actress.

While she was studying in college, she started her career as a model. She has worked in more than 150 TVC ads.
In 2009, during her modelling career, she gave a cameo appearance as a background model in the Tamil movie ‘Thiru Thiru Thuru Thuru’.
In 2010, she again gave a short appearance in the movie ‘Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa’.
She debuted as a lead actress in the Tamil movie ‘Avan Ivan’ (2011) in which her performance as a ‘Constable Baby’ was critically acclaimed by the viewers and won Film Fans Association Award for Sensational Debut Heroine.
