According to Monáe, Johnny Depp’s acting history inspired her to aim for something similar in the future. On Friday, the actress gave a keynote speech during the London Film Festival and talked about her acting and music career. During his speech, he revealed that he wants to take on more diverse roles in the future.

Per Deadlinethe artist told the audience of the festival, “When I think about the career, this person as an actor, his life as an actor only, Johnny Depp has a very wide career.”

Monàe’s mention of the “Black Mass” cast seemed to draw groans from the audience; however, he pulled through and explained that the thematic range of his on-screen characters was a source of inspiration to him. Depp became a controversial figure after settling his highly publicized defamation trial against Amber Heard, his ex-wife.

Monáe listed the number of roles Depp has played in the past and admitted that she wanted a “Janelle Monáe version” of Depp’s range or maybe something better. “The number of roles: Willy Wonka to Sweeny Todd to all dramatic roles,” says the artist.

“Whatever version of Janelle Monae it is. Maybe something better, but I want to be able to do the transformative characters that people wear for Halloween. Something grounded but embedded in the hearts and minds of children forever.” Monáe continued.

The actor’s first on-screen role was in “Moonlight” which went on to win the Oscar for Best Picture in 2016. He shared that he fell in love with the film after reading the script. Since then, Monáe has appeared in films such as “Harriet,” and the Oscar-nominated “Hidden Figures.”

How He Balances His Music And Acting Career

Elsewhere in her London Film Festival keynote, Monáe talked about balancing her music career with acting. Since breaking into music, the artist has released three studio albums, one of which was nominated for a Grammy award in 2019. The album in question is “Dirty Computer,” which was nominated for the Best Album category.

In the speech, Monáe mentioned the great artist David Bowie and how the legend has mixed his music and acting career and, frankly, thrived in both fields.

“I’ve always had a world-building mindset,” he explained. “I have never seen my music career as something that should limit this. David Bowie did this, so why can’t I do this?”

Monáe also spoke about the nature of the films she wanted to be a part of, stating the project was “more joy and more fun”. According to the artist, most of his previous screen roles were “rooted in some deep thing,” such as racing or fighting against opposing forces.

“Race. Fighting against something,” Monáe said. “I’ve been in this space where I’ve had to do a sort of retrospective in my life, about what I need from myself, my team, my relationships. At the moment, I am the most independent of opinions. This is the life experience I want to have, and we’re going to create it.”

At the end of the panel, the “Hidden Figures” actor was asked if, at some point in the future, he would be interested in venturing into directing. He explained that it was something he would definitely go for and expressed an interest in writing.

“I want it to be something that I write, but I’m very open if it’s something that I can co-write or collaborate with someone. I knew that I was supposed to direct,” said the actress. “I’m trying to create a world where that happens.”
