Javed Khan Amrohi is an Indian film and television actor known for his appearances in the Hindi films Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (2001), Andaz Apna Apna (1994), and Chak De! India (2007). He appeared in more than 150 Bollywood films. He died on 14 February 2023 in Mumbai due to respiratory problems.

Javed Khan Amrohi was born on Thursday, 24 March 1949 (age 73 years; at death) in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He continued his studies at the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. He started his acting career by appearing in many supporting roles. He is also a theater artist and performed in many theater shows in Mumbai.

Javed started his acting career in 1973 with the Bollywood film Jalte Badan as a college student.
He appeared in other Hindi films including Satyam Shivam Sundaram: Love Sublime (1978) as Shastry’s Son, Meraa Ghar Mere Bachche (1985) as Ramswarup Seksaria (Newsweek photographer), Baaghi (1990) as Kol Sood Servant, Andaz Apna Apna (1994 ) as Anand Akela, and Chak De! India (2007) as Sukhlal.
His performance in the film Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India was widely appreciated and the film was nominated for an academy award.
In 1984, he appeared in the music video for the film Duniya.
Television
Javed made his television debut in 1984 with the serial Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi as Jhumroo (waiter).
He also worked in TV series including Nukkad (1986) as Karim Hajaam (a barber), Ghar Jamai (1997) as a hotel receptionist, Shaktimaan (1998) as a thief, Vishnu Puran (2000) as Rishi Vishwamitra, and Powder (2010) ) as Siddiqui’s advocate.
Javed’s role as a barber in the TV serial ‘Nukkad’ became very popular and became one of the most popular serials on Doordarshan at that time. In 1988, he gained popularity after he appeared in Gulzar’s TV serial ‘Mirza Ghalib’ where he played the role of a fakir.
Death
Javed died on 14 February 2023 at Surya Nursing Home in suburban Mumbai where he was undergoing treatment for respiratory problems since 2022. He died of lung failure. His filmmaker friend Ramesh Talwar confirmed his death and said,
Javed has been suffering from breathing problems and has been bedridden for the past year. He is undergoing treatment at Rumah Jagaan Surya. He died at the hospital around 1pm as both his lungs failed.
Facts/Trivia
- Javed’s last appearance was in the film Sadak 2 (2020) as Pakya.
- He started teaching young actors at the People’s Theater Society of India after giving up acting. He has been associated with the organization since 1972 as an actor, director, and general secretary.
- He is also a member of the acting faculty at Zee TV’s Zee Institute of Media Arts in Mumbai.
