In a story published by an investigative journalist, Rohini Singh, serious allegations of corruption were made against Jay Shah, along with supporting data showing the exponential growth and financial malfeasance associated with his company. An investigative article reported that in the financial year 2014-15, a company (Temple Enterprise; closed in 2016) owned by Jay Shah posted a profit of Rs. 18,728 on an income of only Rs. 50,000 before jumping to an impressive turnover of Rs. 80.5 crore in the financial year 2015-16, a jump of 16000 times. Various revelations made in the article caused a political storm, with opposition parties demanding a Supreme Court-monitored inquiry into the matter. In response to the story, Jay Shah filed a Rs. 100 crore criminal defamation suit in the Ahmedabad Court against seven respondents, including the author of the article and the editor of an online news portal. The case was filed under IPC sections 500 (defamation), 109 (abetment), 39 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt), and 120 B (criminal conspiracy). The case is still pending in the trial court.
