Jay Upadhyay is a famous Indian actor who mostly works in Gujarati Cinema. He rose to fame after playing the role of Pranav Sheth in the popular Hindi web series Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story, which released in 2020.

Theater
Jay was very active on stage during his school and college days. He came on stage for the first time in 8th standard, when he did a one-act play. She loved the experience and knew she wanted to be an actress. After completing his college studies in 2001, Jay joined the theater group of Manoj Shah, a renowned theater director, actor and producer who owns the production company Ideas Unlimited. Jay considers him his idol and has worked with him in many famous dramas; one of which is Mareez, a biographical drama that has been showing at Prithvi Theater since 2004.
Jay has an abiding interest in theater. He considers theater to be the purest form of acting because it involves live performance without repetition. Jay feels that every new actor should do at least five years of theater as it will help to hone their skills.
Movie
Jay made his film debut with the 2012 Gujarati film ‘Kevi Rite Jaish,’ which he says, ushered in the era of urban cinema in Gujarat. Jay is often praised for his commendable performances in many Gujarati films and dramas. His performance in another Gujarati film ‘Paaghadi’ (2018) won him the 18th Annual Gujarati Transmedia Screen & Stage Award for Best Actor in a Comic Role.
Jay did the comedy film ‘Tu Hai Mera Sunday’ in 2016 which won the Audience Award at the Cinequest Film Festival. The film was released at the BFI Southbank theater during the London Film Festival in 2016 and was loved by audiences.
Television
Jay has done his fair share of TV roles. Jay is part of the famous drama Bhamasha, based on the life of Bhama Shah, a famous general, minister, and close aide of Maharana Pratap. She has also made a guest appearance on popular Indian television show ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’ to promote Bhamasha’s acting.
Her breakthrough role came in the Hindi web series 2020 Scam 1992 directed by Hansal Mehta. Jay’s role in the series was inspired by Ketan Parekh, a former stockbroker who was convicted in 2008 for stock manipulation. In an interview, describing his experience working with Hansal Mehta, he said,
Hansal sir jane jate hai serious movie ke liye, but he is a joker and a bully in a funny way. Wo aap par itna acha joke marenge ki aapko hasna aayega. He’s really a very funny guy who’s known for his serious content, which is very ironic.”
