Jean Dujardin Reveals Why He Didn’t Stay In Hollywood

Jean Dujardin is one of the few French actors to make an impact on Hollywood. From ‘OSS 117’ to ‘The Artist’ and ‘The Wolf of Wall Street,’ his evolution in the industry makes one think he will become, like many French talents before him, a new star in the US in his lifetime.

But that didn’t happen – while everyone envisioned him moving to Los Angeles after his first Oscar, playing in American films with famous actors like Leonardo Dicaprio in ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ or George Clooney and Matt Damon in “Monuments Men,” he decided to stay in France to continue his career in French industry. And everyone is wondering why since he was accepted into the world’s most prolific cinema industry. So what is the real reason why he stayed in his country?

Jean Dujardin Not Tempted By ‘The American Dream’

In 2012, many people in the industry talked about Jean Dujardin’s talent, charisma and everything that surrounded his first Oscar. While Americans are happy to welcome such talent to their country, the French are disappointed or sad that another of their actors is leaving the French industry for Hollywood. But for the French, It is logical because the French industry does not have the same power or opportunity to give to their actors. So, in the end, quitting France feels typical for such actors.

But it did not happen at all; although he appeared in several American films after that, he returned to France and continued his life as a French actor. And when an interviewer on French TV channel ‘TF1’ asked him about moving to the US after the Oscars in 2012, he replied: “Yes, I admit it’s a fantasy. When you get an Oscar, you logically pack your things, leave your home country and move to Los Angeles. Well, for me, It is a no. People said I would go crazy, become a superstar, and forget everything that had happened before. But, no, that’s not what happened because you don’t have to go crazy when you win an Oscar. If you are well educated, not stupid, arrogant, or arrogant, you don’t have to do all this when you win an Oscar”.

Jean Dujardin then added that he loved his life before getting the Oscar and it was an honor to get it. However, he wants his simple life as a French actor: “It was going well before the Oscars, and It’s still going well today because I try to be coherent with my choices. For me, It has never been a goal in life. My biggest dream was realized when I met Jean-Paul Belmondo. I was already impressed when I did theater in France, my first TV Show, and when French Cinema contacted me, I told myself that my life is more beautiful”.

Why Hollywood Wasn’t for Jean Dujardin

Jean Dujardin thinks France needs to love itself more. For him, the French have a huge problem with self-esteem, which may be one of the reasons the industry is not as impressive as Hollywood. And he hopes this problem can be solved because no French actor can succeed in Hollywood for him: “I don’t think a French actor can play in English. That’s what I think. So for me, it doesn’t work. I don’t enjoy playing in English. It’s funny to do it sometimes like I did in ‘The Wolf of Wall Street”, but It’s still rare. The idea is to go home at the end”.

Jean Dujardin is the kind of man who wants to remain cautious. Although he is a close friend of George Clooney, he revealed he only played in American films to brag about it in France: “We did it so we could say ‘I was in Brooklyn with…’ It was flexible! But I never associated the role with a career new acting or something like that. My best role was in France; there’s no doubt about it. And to go back to the language, George Clooney tends to say my lines in English are a bit embarrassing. But that’s how we play; that’s how I play. It’s not shy; It’s the way I play the role they give me. I play like a French man and can’t play like an American man. I have to go further with my exaggerated facial expressions, but I don’t want to do that”.

Afterwards, he recalled to the interviewer that George Clooney was one of his best friends. They understand each other as well as George Clooney is curious about France and Europe. Together, they try to speak French and English simultaneously, and in the end, they always laugh together.
