Jean Smart Says Fear Of Losing Kids Made Her Take Early Heart Symptoms Seriously

Jean Smart credits her well-being to her children, who made her take her health seriously.

The Emmy Award-winning actress, who is all too familiar with the consequences of illness, is reawakening following the unexpected death of her husband, Richard Gilliland, on March 18, 2021, from heart disease.

Following the death of her beloved husband, Smart, who was also dealing with heart problems of her own, had to endure the pain of being a single mother to her youngest son, Forrest, whom she and Gilliland adopted in 2009.

Recently, she revealed that she needs to pay attention to her health to live for her children.

Although the “Designer Woman” actress hoped to live long for her children, she faced health problems in 2023 but came out victorious.

In a chat with People, Smart revealed that the death of her husband of nearly 34 years “dramatically” changed the way she treated her well-being.

The “Hacks” star said, “It makes more sense for me to be smarter about my health decisions. I’m running the show now, completely alone, and if something happens to me, what happens to my kids?”

Smart, who also shares a grown son, Connor, with her late husband, says her youngest, Forrest, isn’t ready for the real world. She said, “My youngest just turned 15. He’s still in school, and it’s scary to think your kids have to deal with things without you.”

Although the mother-of-two is very concerned about making sure she is available for her children, she admits that her children “take good care of her”. “My eldest son lives with us now. He’s helped me a lot since we lost his dad, so it’s great to have him by my side. I don’t know how single working moms do it. I don’t!” Smart stated.

Thinking about her children prompted the “Babylon” actress to take her heart symptoms more seriously earlier this year. The actress admitted, “If I hadn’t been a single mother, I’m not sure I would have pursued it as quickly as I did.”

He added, “I felt not right after working on some scenes in the show [Hacks] and just thinking, ‘Oh, don’t be stupid. Make an appointment with your doctor.’ It was quite serious, unexpected and scary, but I had great medical help, so it was planned.”

Fans may recall that in February, the Emmy-Award winning actress revealed that she had undergone a successful heart procedure.

Announcing the news in the second month of the year, which marks American Heart Month, she took to her Instagram to write a heartfelt message of gratitude to her supporters and medical professionals who played a vital role in her recovery journey.
