“Wednesday” star Jenna Ortega recently said she contracted COVID-19 while filming a popular dance scene in the series. Since its debut in November, the Netflix show has been a hit, with viewership surpassing “Stranger Things” as the most popular show on the platform.
“Wednesday” is a re-imagining of the famous “The Addams Family” and features Ortega as the main character, a brooding and anchored teenager. From previous adaptations featuring the entire family, the series follows Wednesday as he navigates and tries to solve the mysteries of Nevermore Academy.
The “Addams Family” spin-off reached a record-breaking 341.2 million hours of viewing just last week. It has also helped propel some of its actors, like Ortega, further into the limelight.

Jenna Ortega Filmed Her Viral ‘Wednesday’ Dance Scene While Sick With Covid
Ortega joined NME in a recent interview and revealed that he fell ill during the filming of the famous dance scene from “Wednesday.” The scene features the actor doing some unusual but thrilling moves with boring facial expressions. It has gone viral on social media, with several fans choreographing it.
While speaking to the news outlet, Ortega revealed that on the day she was filming, she woke up with aches and pains all over her body. The actor said, “I got the song about a week before, and I just pulled from whatever I could.”
The “Scream” actor continued, “It was crazy because it was my first day with COVID, so it was horrible to film. Yeah, I woke up and – it’s weird, I never get sick, and when I get sick, it’s not that bad – I have body aches.”
Jenna Ortega Says She Was Medicated

According to Ortega, he felt like he had been “hit by a bus,” and the crew, who knew he was unwell, reportedly medicated him during filming. When asked why she was allowed on set despite being clearly ill, the actress said she had not yet received a positive COVID-19 test result at the time.
“I felt like I’d been hit by a car and a little goblin came loose in my throat and scratched the wall of my esophagus. They gave me medicine in between intakes because we were waiting for a positive result,” said Ortega.
The actor said he felt the dance scene could have been better, but there was no time for him to redo it. “I asked to do it again, but we didn’t have time. I think I probably could have done better,” he admitted.
Netflix And Jenna Ortega Face Backlash

After her interview hit social media, Ortega and Netflix were called out for allowing sick people on stage and putting other “Wednesday” cast and crew members in danger. While some slammed the actor, others accused Tim Burton and MGM, the production company, of negligence.
A fan on Reddit wrote (eg BuzzFeed), “It’s not a one-on-one shot; it’s really a whole dance club scene with a lot of people involved. I don’t blame Jenna for letting them know in time, but I think it’s very irresponsible of the producers to continue filming, especially with people involved.”
A fan comment went viral on twitter read, “It is dangerous, unethical, and very selfish, both on his part and on the part of the director and producer. There is absolutely no positive way to spin an actor knowingly exposing hundreds of cast and crew to COVID.”
MGM Says ‘Wednesday’ Follows ‘Strict COVID Protocol’

Since the subsequent backlash from fans, MGM released a statement assuring them that during filming, proper COVID-19 protocols were followed, and when Ortega was found to be infected, he was removed from the set. “Strict COVID protocols were followed, and once a positive test was confirmed, production removed Jenna from the set,” NME reported.
Before the current backlash, Ortega’s “Wednesday” dance scene had the entire internet obsessing and trying to recreate her moves. The scene is in episode four of the Netflix series, and the cast on Wednesday danced to “Goo Goo Muck” by The Cramps.
Besides his awkward but confident movements, Ortega’s blank, unblinking face is what attracts fans, making him a TikTok trend and a meme. Instead of the original song, the scene was paired with Gaga’s “Bloody Mary” in many viral videos.
