Before the book became a single, McCurdy was labeled a “veteran bestseller” because of the book’s 51-week lifespan on the Best Seller list.
Many publishers initially refused to even read a book proposal based on the title, but that did not prevent its success once a publisher was found. The book has remained on the Best Seller list for a full year, and McCurdy said she was “honored” for that in an Instagram caption.
He recently spoke with New York Times about his success as an author.
“Nobody approached me for being an actor from a TV show they watched as a kid,” he told New York Times. “Since last year, he has been recognized 100 percent as the author of this book and I am very grateful for that. I wish I could describe to you how grateful I am. It really made my heart skip a beat.”

McCurdy said that she has met so many people over the past year who have shared their stories with her and “it’s been a very connecting experience.”
The author is currently working on a second book but says she can only keep about 20 percent of the original version when all is said and done.
“Who knows if I would have written that if I had been caught up in doubt too early. But I like to bring doubt when I go through the first draft, thinking about what needs to be rewritten and what needs to stay,” he said. “I think there is a time and a place for the inner critic; I think there is a place for that guy. The inner critic is a man, right?”
