Actress Jennifer Lawrence has revealed a well-kept secret about her decision to star in the science fiction space movie “Passengers.”
The 2016 film, which starred the actress and Chris Pratt in the title role, drew criticism from audiences after its debut for scenes that seemed to normalize abuse. Lawrence has now revealed that before starring in the film, her friend, British singer Adele advised her to turn down the role.
At the time, the “Hello” comedian thought that space movies were too common, it seemed unnecessary for Lawrence to join the bandwagon of actors who have appeared in such projects.
Looking back, Lawrence shared in a recent interview that she wishes she had heeded the advice following the film’s backlash from critics.

In an interview with The New York Times, Lawrence reflected on her role in Morten Tyldum’s 2016 science fiction film “Passengers.” The actor shared that although he was eager to star in the film, his fellow A-lister and multi-Grammy winner Adele advised him against taking part.
“Adele told me not to!” Lawrence told the publication per HuffPost. “He was like, ‘I think space movies are the new vampire movies.’ I should have heard it.”
Finally, Lawrence starred in the film alongside “Guardian of The Galaxy” star Chis Pratt. In hindsight, he wishes he had listened to Adele’s advice following the backlash the film received after it was released.
He added, “I was like, ‘Oh no, you guys are here because I’m here, and I’m here because you’re here. Wait, who decided that this is a good movie?'”

In “Passengers,” Lawrence stars as Aurora Lane, a reporter-turned-writer, while Pratt plays Jim Preston, a mechanical engineer. It centers on the pair becoming two passengers on a massive interstellar spaceship carrying thousands of people in sleeping pods to a colony 60 light years from Earth.
However, due to a mechanical issue, Preston was awakened 90 years earlier from his induced hibernation. Later, he causes mechanical damage to Lane’s pod to wake him up as he can no longer bear the thought of being alone on board.
Pratt’s character’s single act, though driven by desperation, was not well received by fans when the film debuted. At the time, a large number of viewers thought that the part reeked of creepiness and plain abuse.
The film received nominations for Best Original Score and Best Production Design at the 89th Academy Awards.

In response to the backlash, Lawrence told Vogue in 2017 that he saw no flaws in the script when he first accepted the part.
“I was disappointed in myself because I didn’t see it,” he admitted. “I thought the script was beautiful – it was a tainted and complicated love story.”
Despite the backlash, Lawrence believed that the film was not a failure before adding that she wished she had reviewed the part more before joining the cast.
“It’s definitely not a failure,” he added. “I am not ashamed in any way. There are just things I wish I had looked into more deeply before jumping in.”
Pratt reflected on his comments at the time, calling the situation “certainly a lesson.” However, he shared that he was “happy with the way the film turned out” before adding that the film was doing well enough to make a profit for the actors.
