Jensen Ackles Discusses The ‘Twist’ In ‘The Winchesters’ Finale

Actor Jensen Ackles has a bigger role in the season finale of “The Winchesters” than anyone expected.

The “Supernatural” alum, who returned for the prequel series, recently opened up about a major twist in the finale, revealing that “The Winchesters” prequel actually takes place in an alternate timeline from the events of “Supernatural.”

Jensen Ackles admitted that fans were nervous about “messing” with the “lore of the show” in the prequel series. Instead, the actor told Entertainment Weekly that “you get the fact that Sam is still on Earth, and here’s Dean, right in heaven trying to do something to protect his brother’s life. So it extends that tradition.”

“It’s a fool’s errand to try and box ourselves in with what has been created on Supernatural,” he explained. “We will be boxed in by that. To bring our two heroes together and make it make sense in that time frame, it has to be messed with. And the only way to really mess with that is to make it a separate, alternating thing.”

The original series “Supernatural” established the existence of multiple universes through Chuck, played by Rob Benedict. “So we know that there are things out there,” Ackles added. “And then also to anchor it with the fact that, oh, if this is the fail safe that Chuck created, how many other fail safes does he have?”

Jensen Ackles Says It’s A ‘Mixed Bag’ To Play Dean Winchester Again

Luckily, Dean Winchester wasn’t the only familiar face in the finale. Jim Beaver returns to reprise his role as Bobby and Alexander Calvert returns to reprise his role as Jack. Even with a familiar face, Jensen Ackles said it was a “mixed bag” playing Dean again.

“It was strange because we were in different cities, shooting with different crews. I work with different actors. Having Jim there and having Calvert there, it was almost like we were brought in from another team to come and show these new recruits how to play baseball,” he joked.

“Like we’re not in our backyard. But it’s a position that we’re all very comfortable jumping into and, how can you not play those characters as long as we’re all there? It was like Dean was on location.”

Right now, fans are wondering if “The Winchesters” will get another season, especially now that The CW is under new management. However, Ackles said, “I hope so” when asked about a possible renewal of the series.

“We’re in such a strange time right now with networks changing controllers and not knowing what the new format is going to be and how it’s going to play out,” he admitted.

Although the show is not returning for another season, Ackles said, “I know everyone is doing everything they can to make the best show they can. I know I’m very proud of him and everyone involved is very proud of him. Hopefully, we land in some capacity, but I don’t know what that will look like.”

In a separate interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Robbie Thompson admitted that fans will “100 percent” see different versions of Sam and Dean if the show continues, as well as “different versions of the characters that we’ve seen before, maybe actors in different parts .”

“We have many different options. But look, I’ll tell you, I know how I want the series to end and there’s a lot of stories we can do in this corner of the Supernatural universe,” he explained. “And yes, you’ll eventually see a version of Sam and Dean down the road, if these two kids survive whatever torture we put them through, of course.”

However, with the exploration of multiple universes, it seems the potential for future “Supernatural” spin-offs and other series may be limitless.

“We really think that if we do this the right way, you can really open up the realm of Supernatural to a lot of stories,” Thomspon admits. “There are so many more stories to tell and death never, ever stops those characters.”
