‘Jeopardy!’ Champ Brad Rutter Talks ‘Brotherhood’ With Host Ken Jennings

“Jeopardy!” champion Brad Rutter opens up about his relationship with “Jeopardy!” host Ken Jennings.

The two compete against each other in the Greatest of All Time (GOAT) tournament in 2020, which Ken wins. They were both trivia experts on “The Chase”, although Ken left the show after the second season to co-host “Jeopardy!” with “The Big Bang Theory” actress Mayim Bialik.

Brad opened up about his relationship with Ken over the years, describing it as a “brotherhood” while still noting that the two were “very competitive.”

In a new interview with the New York Post on Monday, Brad Rutter opened up about what it’s like backstage at the Greatest of All Time tournament, which also features James Holzhauer competing.

“It’s both a brotherhood and it’s very competitive,” Rutter said. “If the three of us were in the green room at ‘KAMBING [‘Greatest of All Time’] Tournament,’ we were friendly with each other. We’re chatting, but we’re really focused and really intense, and it’s not fun.”

The 45-year-old trivia teacher went on to admit, “Any kind of conversation we do is to ease our nerves.” Rutter has won the most money of anyone to ever compete on the game show, earning a total of $4,938,436. Ken is second with $4,370,700 while James finishes the all-time winnings category with $3,462,216.

The trio appeared on ABC’s trivia game show “The Chase,” where things got less tense behind the scenes as they competed against other people instead of each other. “Backstage at ‘The Chase,’ we’re just joking around and having fun and making fun of each other,” Rutter said before joking, “On ‘The Chase,’ I get paid either way.”

“I still answer trivia questions but I just want to talk and joke with host Sarah. [Haines] and the contestants, compared to ‘Jeopardy!’ which is so intense at every point,” he added.

In 2011, both Ken and Brad famously competed against an IBM computer system known as Watson. Watson easily beat both champions. When asked if he would return to competing with newer AI systems, such as ChatGPT, Rutter replied, “Not likely. They don’t make me do that anymore.”

“I imagine the current version of Watson is 10 times better than what they did to me and Ken, and it beats my and Ken’s crap 10 years ago. So, no ChatGPT,” he said. “ChatGPT can play Watson and I would recommend it . I will definitely be ready for that.”

Although Rutter has not competed on “Jeopardy!” since the 2020 GOAT tournament, fans were disappointed that he did not appear in the 2023 “Jeopardy! Masters Tournament”, featuring James and some famous faces from season 38.

However, as for “Inside Jeopardy!” podcast, producer Sarah Foss hinted that Brad Rutter could make an appearance for the 2024 Masters tournament. “I know our listeners know we’ve got this little thing called JIT, ‘Jeopardy! Invitational Tournament,’” Foss said, referring to the new tournament that determines who gets a spot in the “Masters” tournament.

“Many of you are wondering, ‘Where’s Brad Rutter? How is he not part of the ‘Master?’” Foss continued. “And yes, Brad Rutter has made more money on ‘Jeopardy!’ than any other participant in history; those stats are amazing. So what we want to see now is, how is Brad doing now? Can he come to JIT, compete with some other greats, and prove that he deserves a place as one of the greats during next year’s ‘Masters’?”

Although Brad said that no one approached him to appear on “Jeopardy!” again, he will be open to other opportunities to compete. “‘Jeopardy!’ is about the most fun you can have, probably second to playing ‘The Chase,’” he said.

While many fans also hoped Ken Jennings would rematch, especially given James’ request for a rematch, the game show’s co-host has confirmed that he has retired from competition. Fans can read Ken’s full statement on his retirement by clicking here.
