Although Ken Jennings and Mayim Bialik split hosting duties for the foreseeable future, “Jeopardy!” fans have voiced their desire to see Ken take over for late host Alex Trebek full-time after his long history with the show.
In 2004, the trivia guru won 74 games in a row, a record that was not close to breaking even with 38 seasons of super champions. Through his long tenure on the trivia game show, Ken developed a close relationship with the game show host, which led him not only to become involved with the show as a consulting producer, but as a substitute host before Alex passed away.

As it turns out, Ken met with Alex before he died to talk about taking over as “Jeopardy!” host temporarily. The fan-favorite game show host was candid with his fans about his battle with pancreatic cancer, which he will finally succumb to on November 8, 2020, at the age of 80.
In October 2022, Ken sat down with Vulture to share his last conversation with Alex just the weekend before he died. In the interview, Ken said that he was called by the studio to practice some games and noted that Alex’s voice was “noticeably weaker” than before.

“I was scheduled to go into the studio to practice for a few games,” Ken said at the time. “Even if Alex gets back up like before, he wants someone to take his place for a while.”
“A producer called in, and his voice was weaker than we’d ever heard on air, which really surprised me at first,” he added. “It was a difficult moment. But once you get over that timbre, he’s still Alex.”

The former software engineer later appeared on “Jeopardy!” after he ran in various special events, including the “Greatest of All Time” tournament, where he was declared the winner. As a result, he developed a close relationship with Alex and even told him that he would take a bullet for him!
“The thing that sticks with me is that he thanked me for coming to fill his position. That just broke me,” Ken Jennings told Vulture. “I said, ‘Alex, are you kidding me? We should be grateful to you. I’ll take the bullet for you, Alex. I’m happy to help.’ Of course, I didn’t know that he would be gone in 36 hours.”

Although fans now know him as the co-host of “Jeopardy!”, Ken revealed that it was actually Alex’s idea to be a consulting producer on the show and appeared in video clues long before he took the stage as host.
In September 2022, Ken recalled his conversation with Alex to the Washington Post. “He said, ‘Hey, we’ve talked, and if you’re serious about retiring from Jeopardy!, do you want to come on? Like, move to the front office?’ That’s good, because I already miss that show.”

“Thanks everyone — welcome to Jeopardy!,” Ken began. “You know, sharing the stage with Alex Trebek is one of the greatest honors of my life. Not many things in life are perfect. But Alex did this job pretty well for more than 36 years, and it’s even better up close.”
“We were blown away by his intelligence, his charm, his elegance. Really, there’s no other word for it,” he continued. “Like all Jeopardy! fans, I miss Alex so much. I thank him for everything he has done for all of us … No one will replace the great Alex Trebek.”
