‘Jeopardy!’ Host Ken Jennings Reveals Why He Won’t Give James Holzhauer A Rematch

“Jeopardy!” host Ken Jennings feels like he was lucky to beat James Holzhauer once and he’s not trying again!

Although James hinted that he was eager for a rematch on Monday night’s episode of “Jeopardy! The Masters Tournament”, the host with a 74-match winning streak felt that he had proved enough and was ready to retire.

On Tuesday, Ken Jennings sat down with TMZ Live to talk about James’ request for a rematch and compare it to veteran sports players looking to retire.

“I feel like I missed the last time I got to play with that guy,” Ken said when asked if he wanted a rematch against James Holzhauer, referring to the 2020 Greatest of All Time Tournament where Ken made his debut. “He’s the best Jeopardy! player of his generation and I can’t believe I’m skating with a win, here in my fading decade.”

“So, no, there won’t be a rematch,” Ken said before discussing the Masters tournament. “The thing about this Masters Tournament is that these players are each so great at the game. There are so many clues that I swear to our writer is too difficult. Like, ‘You have to get rid of this. No one has ever heard of this guy. No one has heard of this writer. No one has ever read this book.’”

“And these six players have so many Jeopardy! under their belt and they are very smart. They just know everything,” he continued. “I feel very lucky that I’m not in the trenches with them. There is more job security on the other side of the stage these days.”

Ken later told how much the show meant to him. “Personally, for me, as a kid, Jeopardy! means a lot to, you know, a safe space for trivia nerds like me. And, you know, if I have anything to do with it, we’ll carry on Alex’s legacy for decades,” he added, referring to the late host Alex Trebek who died in November 2020 of pancreatic cancer.

When asked if he would have to face season 38 champion Matt Amodio or Amy Schneider to “bring the belt,” Ken replied, “Imagine it more like a sport where the retired athlete, you know, comes back and he’s the couch, or there is, you know , he’s in the booth, he’s going play-by-play. This kind of thing happens in sports all the time.”

“You have to let someone retire,” Ken continued. “You can’t keep summoning my restless ghost to play for Amy Schneider. He doesn’t need that.”

It’s probably a good thing that Ken will stay behind the podium for this one, as the 40-game champion revealed that he has a new strategy for “Jeopardy! Masters” after facing many other players in the 2022 Tournament of Champions.

Although he ended up winning the tournament, he was still devising a plan to try to repeat his success on stage. In an interview with the San Francisco Bay Times ahead of the show’s premiere, Amy admitted that knowing each other’s strengths and weaknesses was “the perfect point” to the “Jeopardy! Masters Tournament”.

“With almost every game of Jeopardy!, if you lose, you’re done. This is a different scenario, like a sports league season. You keep playing. If you lose, you will get up and take it to the next match,” he explained. “That will be interesting. How do you adjust throughout the season? How do you change your game when you’re up against James Holzhauer, against Matt Amodio or Sam Buttrey? Does that change the way you play the game? That is something that Jeopardy! didn’t have the opportunity to explore before.”

Although he admits he still considers popular music the weakest category, he spends time in the car listening to the radio trying to identify the names of songs and their artists.
