On Tuesday, the 2023 Emmy nominations were announced. “Jeopardy!” was nominated for Outstanding Game Show while Ken Jennings and Mayim Bialik were both nominated for Outstanding Host For A Game Show. Regardless, they face stiff competition.

Ken Jennings and Mayim Bialik will face off again with Steve Harvey from “Family Feud,” Keke Palmer from “Password” and Pat Sajak from “Wheel of Fortune.” Now that Sajak is retiring from the game show after decades, some fans think that he might take home the Emmy against two new hosts, who only took over the show after the death of longtime host Alex Trebek in 2020.

Keep in mind that Steve Harvey won an Emmy in 2022. Meanwhile, “Jeopardy!” ABC. is facing stiff competition from ABC’s “Family Feud,” CBS’s “The Price Is Right,” NBC’s “That’s My Jam” and ABC’s “Wheel of Fortune.”

Ken Jennings Reveals the Hardest Part of Hosting ‘Jeopardy!’

In a June 2023 interview with the New Yorker promoting his new book, “100 Places to See After You Die,” the trivia guru opened up about what he feels is the hardest part of hosting the award-winning game show.

“It’s the speed,” Ken explained. “It’s hard to overestimate how moving it is and what mechanism the host of the sixty one time show has to do: read the instructions perfectly, contact the right contestants, decide their answers correctly. And then it all happened again.”

“It’s really hard work, and Alex makes it look easy,” he continued. “So it’s a no-win thing—the only person we’ve seen do it look so confident and graceful for thirty-seven years, and we all love her.”

He went on to say that he was not alone in determining whether or not a contestant gave the correct answer. “There is a judge’s table that I can appeal to. But, in practice, Alex makes a lot of those calls quickly, just because he knows the game and knows it needs to keep moving,” he said. “And you are also in a difficult position.”

Ken continued, “You’re the referee of the game, like managing the players, but you’re also managing the studio audience and the home audience. You’re the stadium announcer, and you’re the play-by-play guy in the booth. You try to do everything.”

“And actually the way to do that, it turns out, is just to play the game as if you were a participant. I was like playing around in my head, like, Oh, I know this one! Let’s see if they know. Hey, they do, great! We made it! We can go again! And I don’t know if that’s right—it’s definitely not Alex’s energy, but nobody can do what he does,” he added.

Ken Jennings has “Jeopardy!” longest winning streak in game show history after winning 74 games in 2004. While behind the podium, he tries his best to support the contestants because he knows how awesome it feels to be behind the podium.

“I’m always thinking, How can I make the participants feel—I don’t know about comfortable, but at least not panic? Because I’ve been there, and I know it’s hard,” he said. “I saw the handshake when they tried to bet.”

“And they know it’s a tough moment,” he admitted, noting that the final round is one of the “toughest parts” of the game. “The good thing is, you can take an afternoon and do some research online and break down how to bet Final Jeopardy.” He went on to say, “If you can figure out four or five cases, and if you can train your brain to do that flowchart, you can be set. That said, it’s a case in point, and people sometimes get it wrong.”

In addition to the regular games, Ken Jennings also hosts “Jeopardy! Masters” spin-off. Mayim Bialik has hosted a spin-off of “Celebrity Jeopardy!”.
