Richard Springer and Margot Kallmann Springer, who fled Nazi Germany in 1939, are the parents of Jerry Springer. They welcomed him on February 13, 1944, in London as Gerald Norman Springer. Because of his family background, he eventually became a liberal Democrat. Jerry said, “In one word, Holocaust. We lost family in the Holocaust, and one of the things I learned through it is that you can’t judge people for who they are [their religion or ethnicity] but for what they do.”
Jerry never knew his grandparents: both of his grandfathers died long before he was born. Jerry’s parents last saw their widowed mother in 1939 when they left them in Berlin to escape Nazi Germany for the safety of London. Richard and Margo never found out what happened to them, although it is always assumed that they were killed in the Holocaust.
Jerry’s parents moved the family to America when he was five years old, where he finished high school in Queens, New York. Jerry moved from New York to Tulane University for college, where he majored in political science before pursuing a law degree at Northwestern University and working for the Kennedy campaign.
After the assassination of the younger Kennedy, Jerry worked as a lawyer in Cincinnati before winning three seats on the city council. Despite Cincinnati’s often conservative leanings, he received the most votes to be elected mayor in the city’s history in 1977 when he was 33 years old.
During this time, Springer was also married once to Procter & Gamble administrative assistant Micki Velten. They share a daughter Katie, who was born with several physical disabilities and graduated from Western College in Illinois.
