Jewish artists launch guerilla art project during Art Basel Miami Beach to bring attention to rape victims in Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack

The Israel-Hamas war was a hot topic in South Beach during Art Basel Miami Beach.

A group of anonymous Jewish artists, and art world experts, have launched a guerilla art project that has popped up around Miami, aimed at amplifying the voices of Israeli rape victims from the October 7 attacks by Hamas.

The roving works feature bold white type on a red background with messages including, “Rape is not resistance,” “May your daughter never be raped while the world allows it,” and, “UN says rape is a war crime. Except in Israel.”

The project, “A Message to Miami,” was projected on a truck traveling through the city, on the Red Cross building and on a building at the heavily trafficked intersection of Lincoln Road and Collins Avenue.

Images were also shown during Wednesday night’s party at the Bass Museum, but the pop-up project was shut down by museum staff members within an hour.

The work was displayed on the side of the truck, and on the building.

We were told the interaction was not hostile, and the projectionist left immediately.

A member of the collective explained about the projected image, “If we had put up a poster, we have no reason to believe people would respect the poster.”

The anonymous artist, who said they survived the attack, told us, “Miami Art Basel is a time where there are fellow artists, curators, fashion people, DJs and many different industries… we wanted to take the opportunity to say something.”

The projection was also seen on the Red Cross building.

“We never thought it necessary to convince the art community that rape should be condemned, that rape is not a weapon [resistance]or it happens,” the person continued.

“Because the art world has positioned itself as inclusive and a space of activism and consent and language. I feel very disappointed in this community.”

The group criticized the organization for being slow or absent when responding to reports of rape that occurred on Oct. 7.

The artist said, “In no uncertain terms rape is the victim’s fault, but I see intellectuals persuading.”

The artist stated, “It’s the same beast as Holocaust denial, and it’s happening now. This is distrust of Jews and inhumanity to Jews — and that is antisemitism.”

He continued that instead, “The level of gaslighting and retraumatization is very intense. You have people who share what they know and believe, but these Israelis deserve it, which is similar to saying ‘she wears lipstick’ and ‘she wears a short skirt. ‘ In no uncertain terms rape is the victim’s fault, but I see intellectuals thinking about how they got it from them.”

There is mounting evidence of widespread rape with testimony from medics, witnesses, and Hamas footage.

Another group, Kidnapped from Israel, has placed milk cartons showing images of Israeli hostages around Miami.

Israel’s justice ministry said “victims were tortured, physically abused, raped, burned alive, and dismembered,” Reuters reported, which also noted that, “Police say they have over 60,000 ‘visual documents'” including videos from Go- Pros worn by attackers, CCTV footage and images from drones.”

There were reports of a broken pelvis due to rape and a gunman shooting a woman while raping her.

During last week’s event at the UN chaired by Sheryl Sandberg, there was a horrifying testimony by a volunteer who helped collect the bodies of the victims that the woman was shot in the vagina and that there were “nails and different objects,” in one woman’s organ. victims

The milk carton job is another hostage photo shoot, which has been done in places like NYC.

Meni Binyamin, head of the Israeli police’s International Criminal Investigation Unit, said in an interview that it had documented “the most extreme violent rape, sexual abuse incident we have ever seen,” the New York Times reported.

Hamas has denied the allegations.

Almost two months after the attack, UN Women issued a statement, “We are concerned by the many reports of gender-based atrocities and sexual violence during the attack.”

Another organization, Kidnapped From Israel, has displayed large milk cartons around the coastal town with images of Israeli hostages.

On Friday, pro-Palestinian protesters were spotted outside the Basel Art Convention Center.

According to Artnet, the people’s stance against war has become a lightning rod in the art world.

“For the first time you start listening: What is your position on the Israeli-Palestinian situation?” Ralph DeLuca, a collector and advisor, told the publication.

“People want to know where the artist stands on this issue.”
