A new variant of COVID-19, dubbed the Pirola variant, has been detected by doctors in Ohio, Virginia, Michigan, New York, and Texas, but experts aren’t sure whether it’s more contagious or deadlier than other variants.
Also referred to as BA.2.86, Pirola is a highly mutated variant of the Omicron strain of the coronavirus, which emerged in 2021 and became the dominant strain in the US.
“When Omicron hit in the winter of 2021, there was a huge increase in cases of COVID-19 because it was very different from the Delta variant, and it evaded immunity from natural infection and vaccination,” said infectious disease expert Dr. Scott Roberts. in the Yale Medical bulletin.
The bulletin noted that “there is some cause for concern, as this variant … has more than 30 mutations in its spike protein,” referring to the protein on the surface of the virus that allows it to enter and infect human cells.
“Such a high number of mutations is significant,” Roberts said. “When we go from XBB.1.5 to EG.5, that’s probably one or two mutations. But this massive shift, which we also saw from Delta to Omicron, is worrying.”
The White House did not say which variant the first lady was infected with.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last week projected an acceleration in new COVID-19 hospitalizations over the coming month, after five consecutive weeks of increases in hospitalizations related to the virus.
