Jim McElwain, coach of Central Michigan University, has been married to his wife, Karen McElwain, for over 36 years. The couple met in college and married in 1998 after years of dating. Their marriage produced three beautiful children: two girls and a boy. Furthermore, Karen McElwain has been Jim’s most supportive partner and active participant throughout his career. Jim McElwain, an American football coach at Central Michigan University, was born in Missoula, Montana, in 1962.
He began his football career as a standout quarterback at Sentinel High School, receiving all-state honors. He then played for Eastern Washington from 1980 to 1983. The 2015 SEC Coach of the Year worked as an offensive coordinator, quarterback, wide receiver, and assistant head coach at several universities including Montana, Louisville, and Alabama. In 2012, Colorado State University named him head coach. Following his career at Colorado, the two-time SEC East Division champion joined Florida. In 2018, the two-time MAC West Division champion joined Michigan as the wide receivers coach before becoming the head coach in 2019.

Jim McElwain originally met his wife at Eastern Washington University. The couple first met when Jim was a graduate assistant at Eastern Washington. After four years of dating, the couple decided to marry in 1988. It is believed that Jim handed his wife Karen an article about the life of the coaching couple before proposing. Since then, the couple has been happily married and the happy parents of three children: a son, Jerret McElwain, and two daughters, Elizabeth and Johanna McElwain. Karen is very supportive of Jim and his profession. In one of the conversations, Jim discussed how his wife has been an important part of his career.
Jim said, “I’m only successful because of him. He has been with me the whole way. He cares about the kids we coach and the individuals in these families who participate in our organization, and he works hard to keep everything together.” Karen is also known as “Mama Mac”, as she prioritizes providing motherly support to the team.

Michigan coach Jim McElwain responded to the viral photo, which appears to show Michigan football staff member Connor Stalion in Chippewas coaching gear on the sideline during a game against Michigan State. The NCAA is currently investigating Stallion for suspected off-campus scouting and sign-stealing violations.
McElwain acknowledged the university’s investigation but did not identify Stalion, referring to him as a “sign stealing guy”. He said, “Our team is doing everything they can to get to the bottom of this. I absolutely do not condone it in any way shape or form.
