“For years, my mother talked about taking her three daughters to Seoul, Korea, when the cherry blossoms were in bloom. And for years, it was just that — a dream we would talk about in that ‘maybe, someday’ way we all do when something feels a little out of reach.”

The decorator then noted that 24 members of his family finally crossed to Seoul from their bucket list in 2023. As the caption continued, Gaines happily talked about the fun travel experience. He wrote:

“We met a family we had only seen pictures of. We saw the cherry blossoms in full bloom. We walked the same path my mother did as a young girl, and again as a young woman with my father’s hand in hers.”

From this update, one can conclude that the cookbook author is proud of his heritage; however, The Blast previously shared details about his insecurities about his Asian background.

Last November, during an interview, the interior designer revealed that people bullied her for having Korean heritage growing up. The trauma caused him to hide parts of himself to fit in. “If this isn’t accepted, maybe I should hide it and play more about the other side of myself.”

The HGTV star recalled that she and her sisters Mary Kay and Teresa brought up the only Asians in their “whole school” in a small Kansas town called Rose Hill. He revealed how they called him names and bullied him every time he ate rice in the school cafeteria.

The Magnolia Network personality revealed that she went under the knife with a photo on Instagram. In the picture, she covers herself with a blanket as she lies in a hospital bed and makes a peace sign. Capturing it, she shared how the injury happened, writing:

“I hurt my back in high school because of cheerleading- basically throwing a basket caused a back injury and I’ve dealt with it ever since.”

The interior designer also revealed that she underwent a microdiscectomy in 2001 when she had to cancel her second appointment with her husband. Finally, he revealed that he had the same procedure again, amusing fans that his lower back likes to act at the most inconvenient times.
