Former UFC women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk intends to defeat Weili Zhang and continue her challenge for the strawweight title. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen.
“I’m not going to lie — I’m going to win,” Jedrzejczyk told MMA Fighting. “I’m in my best condition but as I said a few weeks before the fight and also a few days before the fight during the media that anything can happen and it did. It occurred to me that I went down.
“But before the fight, like during the camp, I used to think about it. I thought if something happened, I would retire and it happened. But of course, I’m ready and motivated to win the fight and keep doing this. I just signed a new deal with the UFC, good money, good exposure and everything but it happened. It just happened. It’s momentum because of what happened in the fight. If I lose in points I can sit and think about it but I don’t want to waste my health. That’s the thing. That is the main thing. I don’t want to keep losing myself because of what I did.”
Former UFC women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk hasn’t fought since losing to Weili Zhang in June 2022, but she was close to making a comeback in January — until she suffered an unexpected injury.
“I returned to American Top Team in January, because I was looking for a comeback. But I had a really bad injury, since 2020, and it got bad, really bad,” admitted Jedrzejczyk. “So I had to undergo surgery. I have to do physio for the next five to nine months to get back to health, to get back to any sport.”
Now that he has retired, many fans want to know his future. “I don’t want to be a coach, but I see myself helping and training with them,” Jedrzejczyk said. “Because I will train forever. I really like this sport.”
