Jodi Benson Breaks Silence About THAT Cameo In ‘Little Mermaid’

Jodi Benson is best known for providing her voice to the Disney Princess, Ariel, in the 1989 animated film, “The Little Mermaid”. Most recently, he passed the torch (or dingle rider if you will) to Halle Bailey as she portrays Ariel in the new live-action “The Little Mermaid,” which hit theaters last month and has been breaking records ever since.

For those who have seen the new “The Little Mermaid” movie, you may have noticed a special appearance in the movie. Now, Jodi Benson, the original voice of Ariel, breaks the silence in a cameo.

Jodi Benson took to Facebook yesterday to finally talk about her special cameo in the new live-action “The Little Mermaid.”

“Hey guys! SURPRISE!!! I’ve been keeping my special cameo appearance in our amazing new movie ‘The Little Mermaid’ a secret for 4 years and now I’m so excited to finally share some amazing photos with you all!,” she wrote on Facebook.

Benson makes a brief appearance about halfway through the film, when Ariel visits the market with Prince Eric. Ariel, played by Halle Bailey in “The Little Mermaid”, goes to the seat and finds a fork, which she thinks is a dingle rider. The camera shows the woman working at the market stall, Jodi Benson.

Benson actually handed the jumper to Bailey, which was very important and really a special moment for both actors. “I had so much fun filming this beautiful moment with Halle at Pinewood Studios in England in May 2021,” Benson continued. “Our incredible director Rob Marshall & producer John DeLuca invited me to join the cast in July 2019. I spent almost a month in London & absolutely loved being on set & working with the brilliant Halle & Jonah, talented cast & crew and my fellow genius Dear Rob & John-we have been friends for over 30 years.”

Ariel’s original cast continued, “This whole experience has been so magical & incredibly emotional for me. Truly a dream come true! I am so proud of this incredibly beautiful & touching film. Congratulations Halle❤️ thank you for loving Ariel as much as I do!”

Ahead of the film’s official release, Jodi Benson spoke about Disney’s decision to remake the 1989 Disney animated classic into a live-action film, which she said she was excited about.

“I have been a part of the Disney family for a long time; I fully trust our company. I did,” he told the magazine. “I had no doubt it was going to be amazing. And as soon as I heard Rob Marshall was going to be steering the ship, I knew we were in great hands.”

As for Halle Bailey taking on the new role, Benson couldn’t be prouder of the 23-year-old. “Halle [Bailey] Ariel’s interpretation was very good,” Benson said after he watched the film. “I love everything he did with the film. I love the acting, the singing, and the pure spirit. His beautiful love for the character comes through. It’s just a beautiful, beautiful performance.”

He continued, “The acting has been done perfectly with all the characters. You just have to understand the essence of the character — that’s the most important thing.”

Disney’s live-action “The Little Mermaid” hits theaters on May 26, 2023. The film will star Halle Bailey as Ariel, Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Javier Bardem as King Triton, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, and Jacob Tremblay as Flounder.
