Benson recently opened up about the tight-knit club she’s in with all the original Disney Princesses, including Paige O’Hara, who provided the voice of Belle in “Beauty and the Beast” (1991), Linda Larkin, who provided the voice of Jasmine in “Aladdin” (1992), and Irene Bedard and Judy Kuhn, who both lent their voices to Pocahontas in “Pocahontas” (1995).

“We have a charming club, the ‘Princess Posse,’ which I love being a part of. I had text messages with my dear princess friends, with Paige [O’Hara] and with Linda [Larkin] and Irene [Bedard] and Judy [Kuhn],” he told PEOPLE. “It’s great fun to be a part of this incredible club, and to be one of the traditional princesses is a dream come true. To move forward into my 38th year working and loving Ariel and sharing her heart with people, I love my job.”

Benson added, “I love going to the studio, and I get to sing my songs every week, almost on stage with work – and never get tired of singing them. Those are all wonderful blessings that come with my job.”

“I have been a part of the Disney family for a long time; I fully trust our company. I did,” he told the magazine. “I had no doubt it was going to be amazing. And as soon as I heard Rob Marshall was going to be steering the ship, I knew we were in great hands.”

As for Halle Bailey taking on the new role, Benson couldn’t be prouder of the 23-year-old. “Halle [Bailey] Ariel’s interpretation was very good,” Benson said after he watched the film. “I love everything he did with the film. I love the acting, the singing, and the pure spirit. His beautiful love for the character comes through. It’s just a beautiful, beautiful performance.”

He continued, “The acting has been done perfectly with all the characters. You just have to understand the essence of the character — that’s the most important thing.”

Benson also spoke on the carpet at “The Little Mermaid” press event about Bailey playing the iconic Disney Princess, explaining, “Her pure spirit, her joy, her love, her unbelievable vulnerability, her authenticity, her bravery, her bravery… it’s so beautiful. It’s just a beautiful story about Ariel’s story. I’m so proud of her!”

Disney’s live-action “The Little Mermaid” hits theaters on May 26, 2023. The film will star Halle Bailey as Ariel, Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Javier Bardem as King Triton, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, and Jacob Tremblay as Flounder.
