Joe Manchin rips Biden, fellow Dems over border crisis

Outgoing West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin blasted President Biden and fellow Democrats for mishandling the border crisis – saying New York City is being unfairly burdened with millions of dollars in costs to protect immigrants.

Manchin – who recently announced he won’t run for re-election next year – told listeners of WABC 770 AM radio’s “Cat Roundtable” Sunday that they “should be scared of the whole border situation.”

“I told the Democrats, you have to secure the border,” said Manchin, a centrist Democrat who has not ruled out an independent bid for the White House.

“I told the Republicans, If [migrants] have a worker visa permit that allows them to work and pay their own savings and basically pay taxes, it will be beneficial while we wait to judge them,” he added.

“I know in New York what’s happening is you guys are paying millions and millions of dollars trying to house and keep people off the streets. It doesn’t make sense,” he said.

Mayor Eric Adams projects New York City’s bill to care for immigrants could reach $12 billion over three years.

Manchin continued, “We have Democrats and Republicans fighting over small things: ‘Oh, it’s inhumane to secure the border.’ Geez, you can’t be a world power unless you secure the borders.”

But he also slammed Republicans for being inflexible.

“You’re not going to be able to round up all those people, but at least you can get them to register for work … If they’re not working, then you can go after people who come for the wrong reasons.”

Manchin said he’s not interested in the 2024 race for the White House — telling host John Catsimatidis that Biden has been disappointing while former President Donald Trump, the front-runner for the Republican nomination, is dangerous.

“Biden has been pulled so far to the far left. He’s not the person we thought would bring the country together,” Manchin said.

Meanwhile, he said Trump has “normalized this deep hatred.” He wants to … arm [the presidency] for revenge. He believes the only fair election is the one he won [in 2016].”

Manchin said Washington is politically divided and too much influenced by the extreme wings of the Democratic and Republican parties, with moderates in line with middle America having less influence.

“I will not be able to change it from the inside. I have decided to see if I can mobilize the radical middle class – the radical, moderate, sane, reasonable, moderate, modern part of this country,” he said.

Elsewhere, Manchin said he strongly supports military aid to Israel and Ukraine tied to more funding for border security.

He said America could be dragged into war if it does not support Ukraine now against Russia, and said the cost of financing Ukraine is “little” compared to Russian President Vladimir Putin winning the war and putting European allies in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) at risk.
