Avram Joel Spolsky, also known as Joel Spolsky, is an American writer and software engineer. Joel has a blog called Joel on Software that focuses on software development. He is also the creator of project management software Trello. Joel is best known for his work as a Program Manager on the Microsoft Excel team between 1991 and 1994.

Biography of Joel Spolsky
Joel Spolsky was born in 1965 in New York City to Jewish parents. Joel grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and remained there until he was in his mid-teens. Joel later moved to Israel with his family, where he finished high school and served in the army with the Parachute Brigade.
Joel was one of the founders of Kibbutz Hanaton in the Lower Galilee and later returned to the United States to complete his education. Joel Spolsky attended the University of Pennsylvania for a year before transferring to Yale. Joel enrolled at Pierson College and graduated in 1991 with a BS summa cum laude in Computer Science.

Joel Spolsky began his career in 1991 when he joined Microsoft as a Program Manager in the Microsoft Excel group. He developed Excel Basic and oversaw the Visual Basic strategy for Microsoft Applications. In 1995, Joel Spolsky moved to New York City to work for Juno Online Services and Viacom. After five years, Joel founded Fog Creek Software and created Joel on Software, one of the first blogs created by business owners.
Joel Spolsky appeared in and co-produced Aardvark’d: 12 Weeks with Geeks in 2005. It is a documentary about the development of Project Aardvark Fog Creek, which is remote support equipment.
Three years later, in 2008, Joel Spolsky and Jeff Atwood founded Stack Overflow, a question-and-answer community site for software developers. Joel served as the company’s CEO until October 1, 2019, when he was replaced by Prashanth Chandrasekhar. Since then, Joel has served as Chair of Stack Overflow.
