When it comes to Johan Petro’s professional basketball career, he started after joining ElanBearnais Pau-Orthez. He signed a contract with the Seattle SuperSonics of the National Basketball Association (NBA) in 2005, then with the Oklahoma City Thunder. Petro was traded to the Denver Nuggets in 2009, but the Nuggets reneged on the deal, leaving him a free agent. He promptly resigned on August 27, 2009. Petro signed a three-year deal with the New Jersey Nets on July 10, 2010, and was traded to the Atlanta Hawks on July 11, 2013.
He signed a one-year contract with Zhejiang Guangsha but left in January 2014. In February 2013, he signed a contract with French club Limoges CSP, however, he soon left the squad and moved to Florida to recover from his illness. He was also part of the French squad that won the EuroBasket in 2013. Petro joined Mets de Guaynabo from Baloncesto Superior Nacional after recovering from injury, however, he was fired on April 14, 2015. On February 2, 2016, he signed a contract with Leones se Ponce, and a year later, on February 24, 2017, he joined the Sioux Falls Skyforce of the NBA Developmental League.
