In 2020, the actress of “The Woman King” surprised Disney with the way they treated her and her character, claiming that they “knew what to do” with Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver, who played the villain Kylo Ren and the redeemed Ben Solo. , in an interview with GQ magazine.

“Don’t cast black characters, market them as more important to the franchise than they are, and then push them to the side. It’s not good,” Boyega said at the time. “Like, you guys know what to do with Daisy Ridley, you know what to do with Adam Driver. You know what to do with these other people, but when it comes to Kelly Marie Tran, when it comes to John Boyega, you know everything.”

“So what do you want me to say? What they want you to say is, ‘I enjoyed being a part of it. It was a great experience…’ Well, well, well. I will accept the deal when it is a great experience,” he continued. “They gave all the nuances to Adam Driver, all the nuances to Daisy Ridley. Be honest. Daisy knows this. Adam knew this. Everybody knows. I did not reveal anything.”

Later that year, it appeared that Kennedy tried to mend their relationship. Boyega told the BBC (via CBR ) that he got the chance to discuss his concerns about the franchise’s treatment of characters of color with Lucasfilm’s president.

“So I got on the phone with Kathleen Kennedy and she verbally showed support and we got to have a really good, transparent, honest conversation that was beneficial to both of us,” Boyega told the BBC that year. “I think conversations like this, you can go into the realm of sounding like you’re just trying to save your own career, but what’s great now is that it’s a conversation that anyone can access.”

In an August 2022 interview with Vanity Fair, Boyega said that he was still a fan of the franchise. “People are always surprised! The industry issue has nothing to do with Star Wars and I’m a fan of it. I’ve watched Obi-Wan, I’ve watched The Mandalorian,” he said.

“I will forever be a fan of this franchise. As far as Finn? I’m good at that,” he added, saying that he would support his costars if they chose to return to the galaxy far, far away. As for Ridley, it looks like she’s ready to go back to Rey. As far as Boyega is concerned, however, he may not be ready yet.

I’m satisfied,” Boyega said in an August 2022 interview with SiriusXM’s Tell Me Everything With John Fugelsang when asked if he would play the character again. “I think Finn is at a good validation point where you can enjoy him in other things, games, animation. But I feel like'[Episode] VII’ to ‘[Episode] IX’ is good for me.”
