John Boyega Talks Working With Jamie Foxx On ‘They Cloned Tyrone’

“Star Wars” alum John Boyega opens up about what it was like working with Jamie Foxx on their new film, “They Cloned Tyrone.”

The film has been described as an “ode to the Blaxpoloitation films of the 1970s” and features John Boyega as “drug dealer” Fontaine and Jamie Foxx as “the pimp” Slick Charles. Teyonah Parris rounds out the cast as “the hooker.”

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, the “Attack the Block” star talks about the “vibe” of her new film and what it’s like working with such diverse talent as Jamie Foxx. The new film features Juel Taylor making his directorial debut in a film that combines elements of horror, sci-fi, mystery and satire.

“There’s something about us being able to be silly about aspects of our culture that makes me laugh,” Boyega said. “Blaxploitation movies have always represented movies that allowed us to express ourselves, and we could just look cool and do s—. It doesn’t matter if we know kung fu. Everything makes sense with the music, with the vibe. I’m just proud to at least be a part of something that pays homage to that.”

“I like the concept,” he added. “I’ve heard about Juel Taylor’s thoughts behind the scenes. There are rumors of this young director who has a new perspective on entertainment and a new perspective on storytelling.”

“The Woman King” actress went on to call the film a “completely new atmosphere,” adding, “I think it’s a new creative direction. There’s a lot of talk now about big studio projects and wanting more nuanced stories, a return to the drama and comedy we miss, especially during the heyday of Black cinema. I think this is a great portrayal of that, with some really funny moments.”

Boyega revealed that Jamie Foxx is always improving on set, making the set feel like a big family where “Everybody’s just joking around.” Although it was filmed two and a half years ago and faced several delays related to COVID-19, Boyega called it the “number one best time” he’s ever had on a movie set.

“It’s a hell of a thing to be a part of, and the crew is amazing,” he said. “A lot of them are based in Atlanta, so a lot of black people in this. And really, it’s just a vibration. That culture only lives on set.”

Boyega credits Jamie Foxx, who also serves as a producer on the film, for keeping everyone’s spirits up. “He invited us all over to his house, put us through his initiation process, which was basically just vibing, talking, getting to know each other,” Boyega said. “We believe in Jamie.”

He also recalled how the Oscar-winning actor performed a free stand-up show for the crowd that gathered around the gas station in Atlanta where they were filming. “I was also having lunch watching it,” Boyega recalled, saying that it reminded him that “Oh yeah, it touches people who care about actors and your art and your expression of that.”

On April 12, Corinne Foxx, Jamie Foxx’s daughter, took to Instagram to reveal that her father had been hospitalized for unknown “medical complications.”

On May 3, shortly after the announcement that the two had been replaced as hosts of their game show “Beat Shazam,” Jamie took to Instagram to share a quick message with his followers for the first time since his health scare began.

“Appreciate all the love!!! Feeling blessed,” he wrote with a trio of emojis. John Boyega has commented on Foxx’s health in his new interview, but at this time, it is believed that Foxx is still in the hospital.
