John Dean was born on October 14, 1938, in Akron, Ohio. He grew up in Marion for many years, before his family moved to Flossmoor, Illinois. After that, he attended Staunton Military Academy for high school studies.
After that, he went to Colgate University for his undergraduate course, but he transferred to The College of Wooster based in Ohio. At The College of Wooster, he completed his BA in 1961. In 1965, John Dean received his law degree from Georgetown University.

John Dean is an American lawyer, who served as White House Counsel from 1970 to 1973 during the administration of Pres. Richard M. Nixon. He is best known for his role in the Watergate Scandal conspiracy and his testimony to Congress as a witness.
His guilty plea to one felony in exchange for being a key witness for the prosecution eventually resulted in a reduced sentence, which he served at Fort Holabird outside of Baltimore, Maryland. He was fired after his appeal.
He wrote about his experiences in a series of books and went on a tour of the United States to give lectures, shortly after the Watergate hearings. Later, he became a contemporary political commentator. He is also a book author and columnist for Writ FindLaw.

After completing his studies, he joined a law firm, Welch & Morgan, based in Washington, DC, where he was soon suspected of violating a conflict of interest. Because of this, he was fired from work. He should have started negotiating his own personal agreement to obtain a television station’s broadcasting license.
Subsequently, he served as chief minority counsel to the House Judiciary Committee from 1966 to 1967. He had a 2-year term as associate director of the National Commission on Federal Criminal Law Reform leading to his appointment in the Nixon administration as associate deputy attorney general.
He was appointed White House Counsel by the president in 1970. In 1972, he first came to the attention of the Nation, when Nixon named him to lead a special investigation into the possible involvement of White House personnel in the Watergate case.
But he refused to release a fabricated report that was projected to rule out a cover-up following revelations when the implications of White House involvement turned out to be stronger; he began telling federal investigators what he realized.
Nixon fired him on April 30, 1973. After 2 months, he testified publicly before the Senate Select Committee on Presidential Campaign Activities, where he described in detail how White House Officials (including the president) had obstructed justice to cover up their participation in events after June 17, 1972.
He was convicted of obstruction of justice and was imprisoned for 4 months for his role in the Watergate scandal. After this incident, he became an investment banker. He has also published many books and is a frequent TV commentator.
