John Leguizamo Wants To Know Why A Person Of Color Isn’t Playing Mario

John Leguizamo is unhappy that a white man has been cast as the voice of Mario in an upcoming animated film.

The actor is coming from a place of love when he insists that he would rather see a famous video game character played by someone of color. The animated feature was directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and stars Chris Pratt as Mario and Charlie Day as Luigi, his brother.

In 1993, Mario was played by Bob Hoskins and Leguizamo stated that his appearance was a “success” in 1993 because he was Latino and identified as such and played the role of an immigrant character. Now he just sees it as “unfortunate”.

“Directors Annabel Jankel and Rocky Morton fought hard for me to be the lead because I’m a Latino guy, and [the studio] don’t want me to be the leader. They fought hard, and it was a great success,” he stressed.

Menu the actor says that one of his biggest and most eye-opening gigs was Comic-Con. “Many people like the original. I did Comic-Con in New York and in Baltimore, and everyone was like, ‘No, no, we like the old, the original.’ They don’t feel new. I’m not bitter. It’s unfortunate.”

The trailer was shared by Pratt last month on social media, he wrote, “After playing the game for years as a kid (and adult) I’m excited to bring Mario to you all! Enjoy!” immediately fans wanted to know what that voice sounded like.

That’s one of the biggest aspects of Mario and his crew, their fun voices. Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri made sure to release a statement to calm the crowd.

“All I can tell you is that the voice he did for us and Mario was amazing. I can’t wait for people to hear it.” As for the Italian accent, Meledandri tried to calm people’s thoughts by stating that he is Italian and understands.

“Well, as an Italian American myself, I understand. You know, I understand that comment.” He indicated the film will deal with situations of accent or no accent. “We covered it in the film, so you’ll see we’ll definitely embrace it,” he claimed. “That’s not the tenor of the show throughout the film.”

The fact that the accent issue will be addressed is probably something that will make Leguizamo happy to hear but that being said, it doesn’t seem like he sees the need for another movie. At least it’s not another live action movie.
