John Macarthur was born John Fullerton MacArthur Jr. on June 19, 1939, in Los Angeles, California, USA. He is the grandson of Harry MacArthur, a Canadian Anglican minister, and the son of Jack MacArthur, a Baptist radio preacher, and Irene Dockendorf.
During a 1979 interview, he stated that he was distantly related to General Douglas MacArthur. He followed in his father’s footsteps to enroll at the fundamentalist Bob Jones College (1957-1959).
In 1960, after a year off, John Macarthur was accepted to Los Angeles Pacific Free Methodist Church College, where he watched 2 football games his senior year.
In 1963, he was awarded a Master of Divinity Degree from the new Los Angeles Talbot Theological Seminary Bible Institute with honors in La Mirada, California.
