John Simm was born on July 10, 1970, in Leeds, England. He is the eldest of three children. He grew up in areas including Blackpool, Burnley, Nelson, Colne, and Manchester in North West England. Ronald, like his father, was a musician, and John began singing and playing the guitar at the age of twelve. He also directed Edge End High School, where he was influenced by theater instructor Brian Wellock.

Simm then studied for three years at Blackpool and Fylde College at Lytham St. Annes previously starred in Guys and Dolls and West Side Story at Blackpool’s Grand Theater in 1986.
