“Full House” star John Stamos opens up about his struggle with alcohol, and how it led to a “dark” place in his life.
In his debut memoir, “If You Would Have Told Me”, which will be released on October 24, the 60-year-old actor opens up about his addiction to alcohol, and what led him to get clean.
John Stamos Talks About His Alcohol Addiction And DUI

The “Big Shot” star, who just turned 60 a few weeks ago, battled alcohol addiction for years, which even led to his DUI in 2015, which made headlines. That DUI was his breaking point.
“I had that DUI and I was like, ‘I can’t do this. I have to straighten up,'” Stamos told People. “That’s when I confused the universe because I’m not a bad person, but I do bad things.”
A year after he had a DUI, he opened up about how much he “regretted” it, admitting that he “could have hurt someone”. “It was really stupid and ignorant of me,” the actor said at the time. “And I hated myself for that. It was a bad, bad thing. So I said to myself, I have to stop this up and down, up and down, I have to.”
Following the DUI, Stamos entered rehab, which he admitted was “dark for a while”, but “it’s starting to get better”. While in rehab, he said he “made a lot of good friends” who helped him get clean.
“I waited a lot for me, and I feel sad that many people don’t, because they burn their lives,” he added. “Fortunately I have a younger sister, but I also have ‘Fuller House’. I got home and I think like a week later, we started ‘Fuller House’.”

While rehab helped the “Full House” actor get clean, he credits his wife, Caitlin McHugh Stamos, and their 5-year-old son, Billy, with helping him stay on the road to sobriety.
“They have kept me on this path because on the path to becoming aware and taking care of yourself, everyone tries. Everyone does it. You can go for a while. Then, it’s like, ‘I can have another drink,’” he told the outlet. “So they’re always on the road the most they do for me.”
Although John Stamos sometimes admits “it’s hard,” overall he says he’s been “pretty good.”
“It’s hard, but it’s not because it’s hard for a lot of people,” he admits. “It’s not that hard for me because it’s still so fresh in my mind that I just have to look at that picture of me in handcuffs on the street.”
“I was sitting on the side of the road or whatever. It’s just making me throw up now just thinking about it [about it],” he explained at the time. “Never again.”
