In 2012, Depp, Cooper, and Perry joined forces to form the band Hollywood Vampires. Their initial focus was to perform cover songs in tribute to deceased 1970s rock stars. Depp previously toured with late guitarist Jeff Beck and collaborated on a joint album. Sadly, Beck died at the age of 78 after contracting bacterial meningitis.

During their collaboration, Depp and Beck created a collection of 13 songs, including two original songs by Depp. The album showcased a variety of cover songs, covering iconic artists such as the Beach Boys, Marvin Gaye, and John Lennon, as well as alternative rockers such as Killing Joke and The Velvet Underground.

Beck stated in a statement reported by Billboard that playing together with Johnny rekindled their youthful spirit and creativity. “We’re going to joke about how we feel 18 again until it’s the album title, too,” Beck said.

Inspired by their shared love of music during their teenage years, Depp and Beck decided to feature illustrations of themselves as 18-year-olds on the album cover. The artwork, expertly drawn by Beck’s wife Sandra, captures the essence of their youthful memories.

For Depp, working with Beck was a dream come true, as he had grown up listening to Beck’s music. Calling Beck one of the greats, Depp said, “It’s an incredible honor to play and write music with Jeff, one of the greats and someone I’m now special enough to call my brother.”

Their partnership began in 2016 when they first met, and quickly formed a strong bond. They would engage in conversation about guitars and cars, and share jokes, while enjoying each other’s company.

As they spent time together, Beck came to appreciate Depp’s songwriting abilities. This led to Beck playing a song called “Welcome To Bushwacker,” which appeared on Hollywood Vampires’ 2019 album “Rise.”
