The film is based on the Dennis McIntyre play of the same name. The story takes place in Paris in 1916 and focuses on the life of an Italian-born painter and artist. According to the film’s press release, Modigliani, “who had long considered himself a critical and commercial failure, endured a turbulent and eventful 48 hours that would become a turning point in his life, finally cementing his reputation as an artistic legend.”
“The saga of Mr. Modigliani’s life is one that I am extremely honored, and truly humbled, to bring to the screen,” Depp said in a statement. “It’s a life of hardship, but ultimately triumph – a universal human story that all audiences can identify with.”
