John Joseph was born on January 31, 1956, in London. He was the son of Eileen Lydia and John Christopher Lydon. He spent his summer holidays in his mother’s native County Cork, where he was harassed for having an English accent, despite the fact that he traveled under an Irish passport. Because his mother was sick regularly, John was obliged to take care of his four brothers as the eldest son. As a child, he was a member of a neighborhood gang and often got into fights with other gangs.
