The director is as excited as fans for the film to be dropped but he has to be honest about the progress and shared on social media that, for now, production is on hold. Release date is November 2024.
“Not done yet. Just taking a break until the strike is over and we can finish the last part of the film,” he wrote confidently. “We’re only days away from finishing so we’re very close. It hurts to stop everything but we’ll be back!”
The honest post continues. “And we will finish well when the time comes,” he insisted. Chu specifically talked about dedicated actors. “My heart goes out to our cast and crew who were unable to accomplish what we came here to do together.”
Filming Is Latest

The good news in all of this is that Chu revealed that they are on schedule and in a good position because they basically had to stop for a while.
“More to come,” he said. “But in the meantime I’m excited to dig into what we’ve been shooting for the past year here in Oz (release dates shouldn’t be affected) . It’s been an incredible adventure… so much more to do. #WickedMovie.”
The director also took time to tag a group of actors including Ariana Grande, who shared Chu’s post, Cynthia Erivo, Jeff Goldblum, and more. He has one last message for the people responsible for the hiatus in filming, the SAG people, who just want to get paid enough to live on.
“So much love to our dear SAG members who are fighting for a fair deal! We stand with you.”
Other Productions Have Closed

Evil: Part One is just the latest production to shut down in solidarity with SAG members, at least one of your favorite shows shuts it all down to stand with the writers yellow jacket, Abbott Elementary, Daredevil: Reborn, Family Man, Stranger Things.
The list is growing, and many don’t realize that even after a strike is over, it takes some time to get the ball rolling. Many are now worried that some shows in their final seasons won’t get the finale they deserve or that the season might be restored altogether.

The actress who plays Elphaba also shared Chu’s post but she followed it up with an “On Strike” post to make sure everyone understood what was going on until the writer said ‘when!’
The actor admitted in a post that he doesn’t talk much about the Broadway musical making it to the big screen but in a recent post, he reassured fans that the crew is making this the best it can be.
“I’m endlessly grateful to play a role that changed the notion of beauty on its head, I’m endlessly grateful to work with some of the most beautiful souls on the planet and I’m already sad for the day our little bubble must end,” write it poetically.
