Brooklyn-based software engineer Josh Wardle created a word game for his partner Palak Shah just for the two of them. As a word game, he named the game ‘Wordle.’ The couple played for months and the game became a compulsion in his family’s WhatsApp group after he introduced the game to his relatives.
In October 2021, after realizing he might be onto something, Josh released the game to the world. As of November 2021, the publicly announced game has been played by 90 people. Two months after that, over $300 thousand people played the game.
Speaking of games. it invites players to guess five-letter words similar to the Mastermind puzzle game. Then the game instructs you whether any of your letters are in the secret word and whether they are in the right place. A player gets six tries to fix it.
The best thing about this game is, there are no pop up ads or flashing banners.
Josh has also previously curated two collaborative social experiments on the site, called The Button (2015) and Place (2017).
For background, the Wordle prototype was created in 2013. He pitched the idea to his friends and it was thrown away. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, he and Palak delved into the New York Times Spelling Bee and daily crosswords. So, his creativity to create something fun is manifested in ‘Wordle’.
The game is limited to one game per day per player. Also, Wordle can’t share results until mid-December.
