Joy Behar Calls Out ‘Conservatives’ And ‘Heterosexual Men’ For Support Of Tackle Football

Joy Behar recently commented on the support of “conservatives” and “heterosexual men” giving football tackles. The tv personality questioned why so many people stick to the sport despite the huge health risks.

Co-host Sunny Hostin shared a personal story about her son’s injury while playing soccer and vowed to never let her kids fall in love with soccer. The conversation about the sport comes after a football player, Damar Hamlin, collapsed on the field earlier in the week and remains in critical condition.

On Wednesday’s episode of “The View,” Behar called out conservatives and heterosexuals for their love of intense relationship sports, each New York Post.

He expressed his views during a conversation with co-hosts Sarah Haines and Hostin about Buffalo Bills’ Hamlin collapsing during Monday night’s game and suffering an unexpected heart attack.

“45% of Americans think that tackling football is appropriate. Heterosexual men voted the most in support of children playing soccer. And conservatives are more likely to support youth tackling football. Just saying,” Behar was blunt.

Behar’s views raise the topic of why some individuals continue to be drawn to the sport despite the severe health risks to the athletes who participate.

Hamlin’s injury only underscores that amid growing calls for the NFL to implement more extensive safety measures for all teams.

Like Behar, Hostin shared similar sentiments, recalling the personal experience of his son suffering a hamstring injury while playing football. He said that the episode made him realize that playing such a sport could cause extensive damage to other parts of his body, including his brain.

“He realized at that moment, uh-oh. I can – that can happen to my brain, so he stopped,” said the tv personality.

However, Haines shared that the risks involved in tackling football will not lead to a reduction in viewership as fans think it is a big part of the sport’s tradition.

He said, “I grew up, and football was the thing. My parents went to games long after we were in high school because the whole town did it. I loved ‘Friday Night Lights,’ and so on and so forth.”

CTE, an acronym for Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, is a major health risk associated with tackle football. Neurodegenerative diseases associated with repetitive head trauma experienced by football players.

Elsewhere in the conversation, Behar argued that people interested in sports should instead choose less contact professions such as golf or tennis.

Haines also added that many mothers, including herself, will not allow their children to fall in love with the sport as much as before. Hostin with Hostin agreed with her, saying, “I think a lot of moms definitely feel that way and have felt that way for a long time,” she said.

Meanwhile, Hamlin was lucky to be saved on the field after collapsing before being rushed to the hospital. According to a close relative, the football is still in critical condition.

“Right now, they’re putting him on a ventilator, so they’re trying to get him to breathe on his own,” the source said, per New York Post. “So, we just take it day by day. Still in ICU. They have given him a sedative, so just continue the medical treatment they are doing.”

Damar Hamlin Case Unfortunately One Of Many

It’s unclear whether Hamlin’s fall will end his involvement in the NFL, given the nature of his current predicament. In the past, several other players have suffered career-ending injuries of a different kind, forcing them to retire.

Former versatile quarterback Steve Young ended his career with the San Francisco 49ers in 1999 after being sacked by cornerback Aneas Williams in a terrifying helmet-to-helmet tackle. The incident gave Young his seventh known concussion from playing the sport.

Those like Bo Jackson (Los Angeles Raiders), Sterling Sharpe (Green Bay Packers), Terrell Davis (Denver Broncos), Tony Boselli (Jacksonville Jaguars), Joe Theismann: Washington Redskins) also suffered the same fate.
