Juan Merchan (born 1963) is an American judge and lawyer. He is currently an Acting Justice for the Supreme Court of the District of New York. He has been actively practicing law for about three decades.

Career
Juan Merchan started his law practice in 1994 after receiving his law degree. That same year, he began his career as an Assistant District Attorney in the Trial Division of the New York District Attorney’s Office.
After four years in the post, he was promoted to the Investigations Division in 1998, where he stayed for almost a year. He began working for the New York State Attorney General in 1999 and remained there until 2006.
He began his career as a Deputy Assistant District Attorney in charge of Nassau County. He was eventually promoted to Assistant Attorney General in Charge of Affirmative Litigation (Nassau and Suffolk Counties) and Assistant Attorney General in Charge (Nassau County Region) over the next seven years.
In August 2006, he began working as a Bronx County Family Court Judge after being nominated. During his almost three years of service, he mainly presided over Juvenile Delinquency cases, PINS petitions and prescribed crimes.
Juan left the Bronx Family Court after Governor David Peterson named him to the Court of Claims in April 2009. At the same time, Judge Ann Pfau appointed him as Acting Judge of the New York District Supreme Court in the Criminal Term.
While he continues to serve as Acting Justice, his term as a Court of Claims Judge ends in 2018. Throughout his career, he has decided major criminal trials involving the likes of Donald Trump and Steve Bannon.
