Judi Dench Has No Plans To Retire As Eyesight Deteriorates, Relying On Friends & ‘Photographic Memory’

Judi Dench let her passion for acting overcome any challenge!

The 88-year-old has made a name for himself in Hollywood, starring in several hit films, including the Bond Franchise. However, in 2012, the “Philomena” actress was diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration (AMD), causing her vision to deteriorate.

While one might think that Dench’s bad looks would lead to her retirement from acting, she recently revealed she has no plans to quit.

The “Red Joan” actress later revealed how difficult it was for her to learn the lines as her deteriorating eye condition left her almost unable to see. He explained, “I mean, I can’t see on film sets anymore. And I can’t see to read. So I can’t see much. But you know, you just deal with it. Up.”

He added, “It’s hard for me if I have long parts. I haven’t found the way. Because I have many friends who will teach me scripts. But I have a photographic memory.”

However, the British actor felt sad that he had to rely on the public. Describing her feelings, Dench said, “It was the most shocking of the system. Terrible. It’s horrible to depend on people.”

This isn’t the first time the “Nine” star has opened up about her challenges with her vision. In February, during an appearance on “The Graham Norton Show,” Dench talked about her vision problems and overcoming them.

He said, “It became impossible, and because I have a photographic memory, I had to find a machine that not only taught me my lines but also told me where they appeared on the page.”

The “Casino Royale” actor revealed that he previously found it easy to memorize lines. When asked by actor Hugh Jackman if she could recall lines from past films, Dench proved her memory was intact. He proudly stated, “I could do the whole ‘Twelfth Night’ for you right now.”

‘Red Joan’ Cast Criticizes Netflix’s ‘The Crown’ In Open Letter

Regardless of the Golden Globes Award winner’s deteriorating eyesight, she still knows her onions in movies. Last year, he wrote an open letter criticizing the Netflix series “The Crown,” sharing that the drama too fictionalized the Royals.

Dench, in her letter, expressed her concerns about the show’s portrayal of real-life historical figures and events. He noted that while the series was undoubtedly well-made and entertaining, it blurred the line between fact and fiction, possibly confusing viewers about the true nature of historical events.

The Academy Award winner further listed several examples in the show that he believed were misleading. He wrote, “Given some of the hurtful suggestions that appear to be contained in the new series – that King Charles is plotting for his mother to abdicate, for example, or once suggested his mother’s parenting was so lacking that she might deserve a prison sentence – these are both cruel to individuals and undermine the institutions they represent.”

The “Skyfall” actor went on to emphasize that he’s a big believer in creative freedom, but he thinks the hit Netflix show should carry a disclaimer outlining that it’s fiction. At the end of the scathing letter, the actress urged the top streaming platforms to reconsider their decision for the sake of the country and the royal family.

However, Dench’s opinion on the Tv drama did not go down well with some of the show’s fans, and they took to social media to air their grievances. One fan wrote, “No one has a problem with The Crown until it reminds people of how they treated Diana. If Judi Dench is so concerned about the monarchy’s reputation now, she should probably go talk to Prince Andrew.”

Despite the backlash, Netflix reportedly complied with Dench’s request by adding a “fictional drama” disclaimer to the series’ fifth season trailer.
