American actress Julie Bowen discusses her battle with an eating disorder as a teenager and contrasts that experience with her son’s.
Bowen revealed that she was struggling with puberty at the time and didn’t like the “changing feeling”, but found she was really hungry.
In addition, the “Modern Family” star admitted to undergoing plastic surgery to “fix her stomach,” saying that she underwent the procedure 11 years after giving birth to twins.

Bowen revealed during her appearance on “The Tamron Hall Show” that one of the issues she dealt with as a teenager was an eating disorder.
The “Boston Legal” actress stated that she stopped eating because she was constantly worried about making mistakes and losing control of her emotions when she was younger.
She admits that she is often hungry and doesn’t have time to eat while contrasting her teenage experiences with her son’s and highlighting their similarities in the process.
“You know, it’s funny because I have three sons, and they’re all very different. But I see one of them is very similar to me, and I see him always trying to color in the lines and get an A+,” he said.
“And I think (as a teenager) I interpreted being messy or making mistakes or having a** or like fat coming out of the top of your jeans [as] a symbol you can’t help yourself from. That you are too much, and to be good means staying in line—literally and figuratively. Make sure it’s tight,” added Bowen.
“And that’s my attitude: strict. And by the way, that’s not fun. It’s not a fun way of life,” explained the actress again.
He later stated that he thinks his disorder is a “coping mechanism” because hunger makes a person lose feelings, leaving the body “not having time” to eat.
She Talks About Body Shaming Experiences

The 52-year-old actress also spoke about her encounters with body shamers shortly after giving birth to her twins on the programme.
He says, “I was lucky enough to get a little bit of fame and recognition before everyone had a cell phone in their pocket and a camera all the time.”
“I had my twins in 2009, and I was in Hawaii shooting ‘Modern Family.’ It’s not even a year later, and I still have baby gunk,” she added.
“I was working and breastfeeding, and I jumped into the ocean with my husband at the time in a bikini—no one was around—and by the time we got up to the room, there were paparazzi like in a hidden rock, and it was the worst. Like , ‘What’s wrong with him?’ ‘This is disgusting,’” Bowen said.

Bowen revealed that she went under the needle to correct her stomach after ending her role on “Modern Family” in 2020. She openly discussed the issue on “The View,” inspired by the show’s host, Sunny Hostin, who spoke about herself plastic surgery to remove stigma.
“I was finally able to fix my stomach,” Bowen revealed while holding his stomach. “Finally, after all these years. They tore him apart, his twins just tore him apart,” he said, referring to his 13-year-old twins, Gustav and John.
“And I said as soon as Modern Family was done, I would fix it. But it was 11 years! So 11 years later, we’re packing on a Friday, and Monday they come in and they make you like a shoe,” he added.
The actress and her ex-husband Scott Phillips have three sons together: Oliver, 15, and twins Gustav and John, both 13. Bowen and Phillips married in September 2004 but called it quits in 2018.

Bowen has largely kept her love life private since her and Phillips’ divorce was officially finalized in 2018.
During the November 2022 episode he Stop podcast, the “Horrible Bosses” actor revealed that he once developed romantic feelings for a woman.
“I’m straight. I’m always straight. I fell in love with a woman for a while, but she didn’t love me back,” he said. “He likes women, but he doesn’t like me that way.”
Bowen went on to add, “It never really happened, so I didn’t have to challenge my concept of sexuality.”
