Jussie Smollett Checks Into Rehab Due To ‘Extremely’ Difficult Years

Jussie Smollett has turned to rehab to find help and deal with what life has been like for him in recent years.

The actor, who was convicted and sent to prison for hate crime fraud in 2019, has opted for outpatient treatment because he is reportedly not in a good space.

Smollett’s representative confirmed to The Blast, regarding the actor’s whereabouts through a statement addressing the situation.

“Jussie had a very difficult time a few years ago. He has been quietly working hard for a long time and we are proud of him for taking these necessary steps,” they said.

We were told that the treatment was not a residential facility, but that he would work on his own while living at home.

Smollett’s life began to change in 2019 when he claimed he was the victim of racist and homophobic attacks. He claimed that one of the attackers even put a rope around his neck. But in a shocking surprise, two brothers, The Osundairo brothers, came forward and testified against Smollett, saying that he had paid them to organize the attack.

The “Empire” alum was later found guilty on five of six counts of disorderly conduct for filing a false police report by a jury in December 2021 thanks to a Tuna Subway sandwich. On March 10, the singer was sentenced to 150 days in Cook County jail, plus 30 months of probation. Not only was he ordered to pay a $25,000 fine, but he was also ordered to pay $120,106 in restitution to the City of Chicago.

However, after just six days in the Cook County Jail, Smollett was released after posting a $150,000 personal recognizance bond. He has filed an appeal.

As for life after prison, “The Mighty Ducks” star seems to be thriving, making his directorial debut on BET’s “B-Boy Blues” as well as making a surprise appearance at the 2022 BET Awards in style. Back in July, Smollett was spotted reuniting with “Empire” co-star Taraji. P. Henson, who has been very vocal about his innocence.

The couple, who play mother and son on the Fox series, enjoyed a friendly getaway in Los Angeles. They chat, proving that his run-ins with the law haven’t affected their relationship. Recall that the “Acrimony” actress spoke after her on-screen son was sentenced, claiming “the punishment does not fit the crime.”

In a lengthy social media post, Henson compared his co-star’s treatment to Emmett Till. “I am not here to argue with you about his innocence but we can agree that the punishment does not fit the crime,” he wrote. “Emmett Till was brutally beaten and eventually killed for lying and none of the people involved in his death spent a day in jail, even after Carolyn Bryant admitted that her allegations were false.”

The “Proud Mary” star insisted that no one was “harmed or killed” because of Smollett’s crimes. Therefore, the punishment imposed is too heavy. “No one was injured or killed during Jussie’s ordeal. He had lost everything, EVERYTHING! For me as an artist not being able to create is punishment enough. He can’t get a job,” he argued.

He called for the former child actor to be released and placed under house arrest. However, it seems that all the support is not enough to help his cause.

The Osundairo Brothers Make Documentary About Smollett’s Ordeal

While actor Jamal Lyon continues to maintain his innocence, his paid attackers decided to tell their side in a five-part documentary series called “Jussie Smollett: Anatomy of a Hoax.”

The brothers, Abimbola and Olabinjo Osundairo, were featured in a Fox-produced documentary where they gave a very detailed explanation of what happened to Smollett.

“We made sure we got there at 2am. We didn’t have a phone because he didn’t want us to bring any phone,” said Abimbola “So at 2am, he was nowhere to be found. He wasn’t there, so we were like, ‘Damn, what are we doing?’ We have no way to contact him. He has no way of contacting us. So, we waited here for about … four minutes.”

The brothers mentioned that they were stuck in the cold for a while before Smollett showed up. They also have to say certain words before the staged attack takes place.

“When we cross the street, we say, ‘Hey,’ to get his attention. ‘Hey, n—–.’ He turned, looked at us, and that’s when we started yelling the famous curse he wanted us to yell. ‘Hey, aren’t you ‘Empire’ f—-t?’”

They claim that Smollett just wanted to look tough, so he told them “Hey, don’t hit me a– just. Make it look like I’m fighting and stuff.”
