Thanks for the update, Kamala.
The vice president awkwardly assured potential 2024 voters in an interview Sunday night that President Biden is “very much alive and running for re-election” — despite growing concerns from Democrats, liberal donors and everyday Americans about the incumbent’s age.
“We’ve talked to some Democratic donors and they’ve told us that, if something were to happen to President Biden and he couldn’t run, there would be a free for all who would run for president,” Bill told CBS News. Whitaker told the 80-year-old commander-in-chief’s view on “60 Minutes.”
“You’re in a place that it’s natural for you to step up, but we’re hearing from donors that they’re naturally not going to match. Why is that?” asked Whitaker.
Harris responded: “Well, first of all, I’m not going to engage in that hypothesis because Joe Biden is very much alive and running for re-election.”

“I heard from a lot of different people a lot of different things. But let me tell you, I’m focused on the job. I really am,” Harris added after Whitaker called Biden’s age a “legitimate concern.”
“Our democracy is on the line, Bill,” he said. “And I frankly, in my mind, don’t have time for living room games when we have a president running for re-election. That all.”
When confronted by Whitaker about the fact that he and Biden were voting “neck and neck” against Republican front-runner Donald Trump, who has been indicted on 91 criminal charges, Harris also demurred.

“Why aren’t you 30 points ahead?” asked Whitaker.
“Well, I’m not – I’m not a political expert, so I, I, I’m not going to speak to that,” Harris struggled to answer.
“But what I will say is this: When the American people can take a hard look at election time about their choices, I think the choices will be clear. Bill, we will win. Let me tell you. We will win. And I’m not saying it will be easy. But we will win.”

On Friday, Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.) launched a long-running effort to challenge Biden for the Democratic presidential nomination after unsuccessfully lobbying several blue-state governors for the president.
A poll from August showed 77% of Americans – and two-thirds of Democrats – believe Biden is too old to serve another term.
Phillips, 54, has also expressed concern about the president’s path to winning the general election, given the “appalling” behavior of his son Hunter Biden.

The first son was indicted on three firearms charges last month and may face further charges related to tax fraud and illegal foreign lobbying in Washington, DC, and Los Angeles.
While Phillips said Biden had acted “heroically” by supporting Hunter amid the allegations, he also insisted the president was viewed “as corrupt as Trump” by many voters.
About half of registered voters (52%) say Hunter Biden broke the law in his foreign business dealings with Ukrainians and Chinese nationals, according to a Fox News poll from earlier this month.

The same percentage of voters said Trump’s decision to keep classified documents after leaving office and try to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election was also invalid, the poll showed.
The Fox News poll also found a large number of registered voters (40%) said Biden did something wrong regarding his son’s foreign business affairs.
“I’m looking at the polling data, and I’m looking at all of them. The number of presidents is not good — and it’s not getting better,” longtime Democratic strategist James Carville was quoted in the Atlantic last week as telling Phillips.

“No one said, ‘James, you’re wrong,'” Carville added. “They said, ‘James, you can’t say that.'”
Whitaker also cited some hard polling numbers during his interview with Harris.
“A recent CBS poll found that at the beginning of President Biden’s term, 70% of young people, under the age of 30, said he was doing a good job. Now it is less than 50%. Why is that? What’s going on?” asked Whitaker.
“If you survey how young people feel about the climate, and the warming of our planet, it’s considered one of their top concerns,” Harris said. “When we talk about what we do with student loan debt, the vote is very high.”

“The challenge we face as an administration is that we have to tell people who brought it to them,” he added before breaking into his trademark. “That is our challenge. But it’s not because the work we do isn’t popular with a lot of people.”
Biden’s job approval rating has been underwater since the failed withdrawal of US troops in August 2021, with 40.7% having a favorable opinion and 55.6% having an unfavorable opinion of the president, according to the latest RealClearPolitics polling average.

“Most Americans say they don’t think you’re doing a good job at the border, you and the administration,” Whitaker pressed Harris. “The number of people trying to cross the US southern border is – at an all-time high.”
“It’s no secret that we have a broken immigration system. In the short term, we need a secure, orderly and humane border policy,” said the VP.
“And long term, we need to invest in the causes of migration. But the bottom line? Congress needs to act. Come on. Participate in solutions rather than political games.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has expressed a willingness to negotiate with Biden and Democrats to pass legislation providing further military aid to Ukraine as long as a separate bill for US border security is passed.
In his first interview after winning the gavel, Johnson also said Biden was showing signs of cognitive decline due to his age.
“Obviously, if you look at the tape of Joe Biden making arguments in the Senate Judiciary Committee a few years ago and you look at the speech he’s giving now, there’s a difference,” Johnson told Fox News host Sean Hannity.
“Again, it’s not a personal insult to him. It’s just reality.”
